He disappeared after radio reports failed and the wreckage was found near Rocky Ridge four miles west of Danville. Vance a celebrated pilot began his airmail career in 1920 and was noted for expertise on the San Francisco Reno Salt Lake division. The loss marked another perilous day in early airmail service with fog and instrument reliance cited by officials.
