Windsors Leave Today for Bahamas

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor depart Miami aboard the Southern Cross at 5 p.m. EST, returning to Nassau where the Duke resumes governorship duties. The Duchess recovers from a dental operation, purchasing several dresses for the trip. Ed ward golf partners Gene Sarazen and Sam Snead accompanied the Windsors in a casual outing.

Germany Plans Invasion Of Britain Soon

Lord Beaverbrook, minister of aircraft production, said Germany is preparing for an invasion of England before springtime by land and sea but mainly by air. He noted a feverish buildup of production and an immense effort to create a large air force early next year. He warned Britons against overconfidence, stating Hitler remains Europe’s military master but not as powerful as before. American planes are arriving in Britain in growing numbers, with 26,000 American-built planes expected by 1942. Britain’s own output in August through November doubled versus the prior year.

Snow delays recount in San Miguel ballots

Snowfall delayed the recount of the San Miguel fourth judicial district race in Las Colonias. Voters could not reach Las Vegas and the mountain precinct recount faced indefinite postponement due to blocked roads. Noble leads Armijo by 368 after rechecks, with Armijo’s contest awaiting Santa Fe court hearing on December 23.

Petain and Abetz Confer On France's Future

In Vichy on December 17, Marshal Petain and German envoy Otto Abetz held a three and a half hour meeting seen as pivotal for France’s future. A luncheon followed attended by Huntziger Darlan and Baudouin, with Laval reportedly summoned. The Petain cabinet then convened and adjourned later.

Inquest Held In Death Of Bandit Gulley

An inquest before Pat O Neill J P ruled Marvin James Gulley died from gunshot wounds inflicted by Sheriff Frank Young or deputy Lamar Strickland while resisting arrest for a felony in Chaves County. Jim Dodrill Dies In Chandler Oklahoma

Jim Dodrill formerly of Roswell and more recently a resident of Chandler Oklahoma died there last night. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at Chandler, with Mrs. J T Reynolds a sister in law of Dodrill receiving notice.

Roswell Christmas Window Tells Local Year in Miniature

Mrs. Louise Chewning for the Chamber of Commerce created a Santa Claus themed window in Roswell that narrates a year of local progress. The miniature White Mountains backdrop features the Plains with signs highlighting institute building, Navajo weavers articles, J. P. White Co. feed cubes, Continental Air Line grant, airport completion, highway 70 near completion, increased livestock feeding, State Fair success, and population growth from 11,173 in 1930 to 13,443 in 1940. The display is meant to be viewed to be fully appreciated.

Refinancing Plan Filed For El Paso Electric

New York December reports a revised refinancing plan for El Paso Electric Co to be filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. President Donald C. Barnes of Engineers Public Service Co. said the plan, originally due October 30, now shifts away from liquidation toward donation of Mesilla Valley Electric Co. property to El Paso Electric Texas and postpones Delaware holding company liquidation.

Secretary Hull told defense commissioners that Britain would face a serious crisis next spring unless U S war supply deliveries increase. The warning followed Britain's appeal for financial assistance, with Hull urging maximum production of arms planes and other supplies. Shipping capacity and merchant ships were under review for possible expansion.

Explosion destroys Cincinnati building killing eight to eleven

An early morning blast leveled a three story downtown building in Cincinnati injuring twelve and leaving three missing. Eleven children were among the dead as police and fire crews evacuated debris and identified victims including Dora Smith nine Helen Schnetzer eight and Leonard seven among the deceased.

Mine Blast May Kill Seven at Raleigh Coal Mine

Capt Gray Gets Call to Active Duty

Capt Herbert C. Gray, Roswell Reserve Officer, has been ordered to report at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, for one year of active duty. He will spend the first 12 weeks in the Field Artillery School academic department before reassignment. Gray previously commanded Battery A here for many years.
