U S Report Says Situation In Hand As Japanese Lose Transports

U S bombers damaged two Japanese transports near Legaspi on Luzon as announced with reports of earlier sinkings and heavy losses to Japanese shipping. Dutch submarines also claimed victories off Malaya while air battles over Luzon continued and MacArthur said the overall Philippines situation remained well in hand.

U S Lost Six Warships At Pearl Harbor Says Sec Knox

Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox announced that the battleship Arizona and five other ships were lost in the Pearl Harbor raid. He cited 91 officers and 2,638 enlisted dead, and Japanese losses of 3 submarines and 41 aircraft.

Jap losses mount as transports sunk near Philippines

Allied reports indicate thousands of Japanese soldiers perished or were crippled as transports were sunk off the Philippines. In other theaters, Japanese forces gain ground in Hongkong area while the U.S. Navy holds Wake and Midway. A combined total of 15 Japanese ships were sunk or badly damaged.

Mrs. Addie Flood Former Roswell Teacher Dies

Addie Flood wife of Roy L. Flood died Sunday at 1 05 AM after illness since Tuesday. Born in Stanton Texas she moved to Roswell in 1918 and taught at Circle Y East Grand Plains Berrendo and Missouri Avenue schools and a year at Port LaMon in Central America. She was active in First Christian Church and Roswell Eastern Star. Funeral Tuesday at Ballard Chapel with Eastern Star aiding and Martha officer presiding.

Air Wardens Urged to Register for First Aid Course

Air raid wardens appointed during the statewide test blackout are urged to enroll in Red Cross first aid training. A meeting at the Women’s Club is set for tomorrow at 7 30 BTA, per Manuel F. Moseley head of the local air raid warden service. The national civilian defense council requires all wardens to have first aid training.

Washington December 15 The civilian defense office issued emergency instructions for schools in an air raid to guide teachers and pupils. When warning sounds schools should activate the fire alarm, escort each class to air raid refuge, forbid leaving the building, and not dismiss until an all clear signal is given.

Swift Action By Congress On War Bills Expected

Armstrong Dies From Bullet Wound

Armstrong died at St Marys hospital from a bullet wound inflicted in a Hagerman Mineral Wells apartment affray last Wednesday night. Three men are held in Chaves county jail. Orbit Shorty Ham, his son William Ham, and Thomas Wallace Baker. A bullet from a Frontier model Colt revolver was removed. it entered the arm and chest, lodging in the spine.
