Tokyo radio broadcast picked up by a United Press post acknowledged damage to Japanese naval forces attacking Wake Island. The broadcast had earlier claimed sweeping victories over British and American fleets in the Pacific. The report continued on page two.

Military Demands Cancel Rose Bowl Game

In Sacramento on December 13, military authorities and Governor Olson urged canceling the Rose Bowl between Oregon State College and Duke University. Nazis Fire on French Jews and Hostages in Paris

Nazi authorities in France sentenced French Jews to a 20 million dollar fine and executed 303 hostages in Paris as reprisals. CATRO Dec 13 UPI German and Italian troops, pressed by advancing imperial forces, withdrew on a broad front in Libya as British main forces pushed west and northwest from south of Gazala. British mobile columns sought to cut off escaping units while tanks clashed near Gazala. full results were not disclosed.

Knox Returns From Honolulu After Pacific Trip

Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox completed a rapid inspection trip to the Hawaiian Islands and will confer with President Roosevelt in Washington. The 11th Naval District said Knox arrived back in San Diego after the Pearl Harbor actions, but gave no details on travel or timing.

Germans Broken And Crushed In Bloody Retreat

London dispatch reports the Red Army driving the German forces back across a broad front from Leningrad to the Black Sea. About 20 Nazi divisions totaling roughly 450,000 men crushed or broken, with 51 divisions retreating on the Moscow front. Soviets recaptured 25 villages and towns including key junctions near Tula and Yelets, and in Kalinin and Leningrad sectors. Soviet guard units under General Belo seized 19 tanks, 3 guns, and 119 trucks amid a claimed general counter offensive.

Dutch Strike Heavy Blows At The Japs By Sea And Air

Dutch air and naval forces supplementing British Malaya defense were said to have hit Japan hard at sea and at home. Submarines off Thailand reportedly sank four Japanese troop transports, about 4,000 troops lost, while Dutch forces destroyed a Japanese post on Borneo’s east coast and interred Japanese found there. Bids Sought For Two Roswell Air Base Construction Jobs

An advertisement for bids will be issued about December 16 by the U S Engineer district office at Caddoa Colorado for two Roswell Air Base projects the construction of a sewage disposal plant and an incinerator. The ad period lasts 20 days and the winner must start within one day of notice with about 90 days to complete the work.

State Guardsmen From Roswell To Alamogordo

Fifteen members of the State Guard from Roswell were scheduled to leave this morning for guard duty at Alamogordo Dam north of Fort Sumner to relieve Clovis guardsmen already on duty there. The Roswell unit will be relieved later by an army detachment, but timing is not yet known. The fifteen to be sent had not been selected last night.
