Nations Pay U.S. War Debts as Five Fall Default

Washington reports six nations sent payments to the United States while five countries defaulted or failed to pay. Great Britain led transfers with 95.55 million in gold via the Bank of England to the New York Fed for credit, as France Belgium Poland Estonia Hungary also missed payments. The treasury expected Italy, Czechoslovakia, Finland Latvia and Lithuania to remit sum total 26.21 million as unpaid, with Greece previously missing a 444,920 payment.

Watson to become chief justice of New Mexico

Justice John C. Watson, senior member of the New Mexico supreme court, will automatically become chief justice on January 1, succeeding Howard L. Bickley. He will be the state’s only Republican official remaining in the Capitol and is expected to administer Gov. Arthur Seligman’s oath on the new year’s first day.

Beer Bill Ordered Reported To House

The house ways and means committee moved two bills forward. One would legalize 3.2 percent beer and the other would legalize wine with unlimited alcohol content. The beer tax is set at five dollars per barrel of 31 gallons. Representative Rainey of Illinois said the beer bill would be taken up in the house next Tuesday. Savings urged for veterans hospital costs over 33 years

Washington December 15 AP Frank T Hines administrator of veterans affairs urged a joint congressional committee to authorize savings of about one billion dollars in veterans hospital construction over 33 years and an annual cut of nearly 12 million dollars from existing appropriations as a further slash in expenses.

Willard Bandit Caught After Willard Robbery Shootout

J L Burnett, 20, of Albuquerque, surrendered to a rancher near Mountainair after a Willard holdup gone wrong. Scott was killed during the robbery at Alter filling station and store. Burnett said the pair planned the crime for money, stole a car, and hid in a Mountainair area before surrendering. Sheriff Ramon Gallegos detained Burnett. Harvey Eades was cleared of involvement. Burnett waived preliminary hearing with $3,500 bond.

Ventilation failure blamed for Albuquerque mine explosion

A coroner's jury in Madrid New Mexico found that a temporary failure of the venting system at the Jones mine of the Albuquerque and Cerillos Coal Company allowed explosive gas to accumulate in the fourth light entry pocket and be ignited by an electric arc. Sixteen witnesses testified, including survivors from the December 7 disaster that killed fourteen men.

Prominent Ueologist Testifying in Hobbs Townsite Suit

Dr. Irvine Perrine, noted oil geologist and professor, testified for the plaintiff in Hobbs Townsite Co. vs Midwest Refining Co. in Roswell federal court about bottom hole pressure as a measure of oil drainage. Leo V. Horton, consulting geologist, also testified on drainage and ultimate recovery estimates, with trial projected to continue through the week. The suit seeks 39,936.78 dollars plus 235.00 dollars for oil lost beyond recovery and other plantiff-share oil values.
