Back From Combat Big Welcome Greets Carrier Independence
The aircraft carrier Independence returned to Norfolk after seven months in Viet Nam waters. She docked amid rain and fog with 18 missing crew and 16 planes, as thousands of relatives welcomed the ship home just before Christmas. A ruptured fuel tank aboard a departing plane caused a sheet of flame on the flight deck Sunday, casting a shadow over the joyous reunion.
