In a municipal court hearing James S. Haynes faced gambling charges. Judge James O'Brien rolled seized dice and declared seven the number, then rolled again and got ten. The judge fined Haynes twenty five dollars plus costs.
Four persons died in separate New Mexico traffic accidents raising the year toll to 367. Victims include Francisco Bunn 26 Eloy Arizona Gloria Chavez 77 Albuquerque Morris Sylvester 2 a Lybrook and Arthur Tibbetts Jr 31 Farmington High School teacher.
Local Draft Board No. 3 of the Selective Service System requests information on 13 men it cannot locate. Citizens may contact the local office by mail at P. O. Box 1244 or by phone at MA 2 8200 or report to the courthouse basement. Tens of thousands of Budapest workers quit again after a two day general strike to protest the arrest of the Budapest Central Workers Council leaders. Russians led by Gen Ivan Serov reportedly take control of the Kadar regime amid chaotic conditions and deadly clashes in Budapest and provinces.
In Memphis the 23 finalists for the Maid of Cotton contest were announced for December 27 and 28. The winner will succeed Pat Cowden of Raleigh, with entrants including Joe Beth Stevens of Deming New Mexico and four Texas contestants Sherry Sinex of Longview Sharon Henson of Austin Margaret Wunderlich of Dallas and Llewellyn Watson of Larsa.
The State Board of Health will review a $25 347 federal grant for Roswell sewage facilities at its December 15 meeting alongside grants for 10 other New Mexico communities. The interceptor sewer aims to relieve downtown overload and serve new southern neighborhoods, with regional US Public Health Service approval pending.
Senator Anderson of New Mexico asks the Senate Preparedness Committee for National Defense to investigate Civil Service employment practices at White Sands Proving Ground. NATO foreign ministers endorsed a five point plan on Eastern Europe to reassure Russia and avoid militant action. West German Foreign Minister Heinrich von Brentano said the free world must inform the people of Eastern Europe about its stance while avoiding uprisings that could spill into Western Europe. Dulles said the U S may act alone in some cases without NATO. The group also backed mediation by Secretary General Lord Ismay to resolve Cyprus tensions among Greece Britain and Turkey.
Two Bernalillo County deputies respond to a damaged headlight incident near the county courthouse in Albuquerque. Deputy Lester Hay backed a police car into a parked vehicle, then both officers inspected the other car’s front. The damaged vehicle belonged to Sheriff Harold Hubbell.
An Artesia boy, Jack Armstrong Jr., 11, was killed by an accidental shot from a .30-30 rifle in his home bedroom. The weapon, owned by his father, was found across his arm as the mother, in the kitchen with a servant, heard the shot. Funeral arrangements are pending at Paulin Funeral Home in Artesia.
The 1953 amendment adding two legislators to New Mexico's State Board of Finance may deny Gov elect Mechem a Republican majority on the board. The board now includes the governor, auditor, three governor-named members, and two legislative members from the House and Senate. Democrats control both houses, suggesting Mechem may face a Democratic lineup in the public and legislative appointees.
Nashville The Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention voted to recommend a record 1958 budget goal of 164.2 million dollars. The proposed budget is about three million greater than total receipts in 1956.
The General Assembly adopted a US backed resolution condemning the Soviet invasion of Hungary by 33 to 8 with bloc votes against. It called for immediate Soviet troop withdrawal under UN supervision and restoration of Hungary’s political independence. Eleven Asian-African members abstained, while Burma and Ceylon joined in condemning the Soviets.
Sen. Chavez of New Mexico, chairing the Senate appropriations subcommittee, warned at Maxwell Air Force Base that Congress will again clash over Air Force funding. He cited a Defense memorandum and vowed to oppose proposals to reduce the 137 wing air power buildup and questioned cutting production goals in a time of world tension.

She described him as an ordinary man with extraordinary dimensions and a modern church in a jungle setting. Proceeds support the Schweitzer Hospital Fund as she plans to depart for Lambarene Dec 20.
In Clovis New Mexico Dist Judge FE Hensley Jr jailed J B Martinez and his 16 year old son after their theft case. He ordered six other youths and parents jailed briefly until court costs are paid and $23 of stolen produce is restored. The judge invoked a new law allowing detention of both offender and parent in juvenile cases.
82 year old Miss Alice Fairman was trapped for 32 days when a door knob fell off her second floor bedroom door. Police forced entry into the large frame house after a neighbor reported no activity. She had no food or water and her coal bucket ran out before her rescue. she had lowered a plea for help.
About 15,000 gallons of grain alcohol spilled into the Ohio River near Maysville Kentucky after a tug rammed a barge. The tugboat sustained no damage and barge owners planned to recover the vessel.
