Silent film era fades as talkies rise and critics reflect
A retrospective on cinema shows why silent stars like Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Mary Pickford, and Charlie Chaplin struggled when sound entered films. The piece weighs how the talkies reshaped stardom, while praising the enduring global reach of movies and their power to depict distant lands and events. It contrasts weather tales from Roswell with broader European conflict, noting Finland’s resistance and wartime economic strains shaping American life and industry.
