Santa Fe New Mexico December 13 1939 state comptroller C R Sebastian warned the University of New Mexico must enforce rigid economy after an audit showed a 56721.62 current fund overdraft for 1938 39 with expenditures 20181.02 above revenues and a 29806.71 budget excess. The overdraft stemmed from transferring 54100 from the current fund to the interest and retirement fund on June 30 1937 to service next year funds. Sebastian noted a 1935 law required advance budgeting of interest and retirement costs and the university plans to amortize the deficit while budgeting for 1940 41. The university president James F Zimmerman said efforts to reduce the overdraft failed as the school grew too fast. A firm was hired to craft an amortization plan for next spring when the 1940 41 budget is considered. The state cut the current year budget by 10 percent after restoration of a similar cut the prior year.
