William Fladd, a Roswell High junior, dressed as Buddy the Elf for a pancake breakfast fundraiser hosted by the school band at Applebee's. Known for past court jester roles and a fifth grade run, he faced nerves yet hoped the costume would help him speak and perform before the crowd.

Suspect pleads not guilty in Walmart shooting case
Joshua Ray Martinez 18 of Roswell pled not guilty to one count each of first degree murder and unlawful possession of a handgun by a minor after a Walmart Supercenter Roswell shooting on October 14. The arraignment occurred in Chaves County Fifth Judicial District Court with no trial date set. Soltero died from seven gunshot wounds sustained during the incident. Martinez remains in pretrial detention.
