Italian military shakeups deepen Mussolini crisis
In Italy two top generals died in a northern Italy plane crash while reshuffles continued. Marshal Badoglio and General De Vecchi were moved to retirement along with others, and General Camillo Grossi was named Pintor’s successor as head of the Italian armistice commission. In London, officers warned the crisis could signal Mussolini’s weak grip as Italy absorbs the turmoil. Separately, New Mexico Governor Miles underwent a minor operation at the Mayo Clinic and is recovering.
