In a 11 hour ordeal off Muskegon Harbor mouth the Henry Cort crew and five coast guardsmen fought gale and freezing seas to reach the distressed freighter. One man John Dipert died in a rescue attempt as a small boat swamped. Sixteen survivors reached the North Breakwater and began a perilous cross to shore amid whitecaps. Ambulances stood by as rescuers faced a 50 mile gale and freezing temperatures with snow beginning to fall.
