Senator Wants Kelly to Serve Not as Governor

Sen. Clinton P. Anderson says John Kelly of Roswell should stay in public service and not pursue New Mexico's governorship. He offered Kelly an economic post in Paris and noted Kelly’s recent work leading the interior mineral resources division.

20 Students From Abroad Seek to Know New Mexico

Roswell hosts 20 youths from Camp Rising Sun New York for a Rotary sponsored visit. The group asked about climate geography and local history during sessions at the YMCA and a tour of Roswell sites including Miles Service Station Pecos Valley diamonds and a sheep ranch visit at Phelps White ranch. They will explore Ruidoso Sierra Blanca Gondola and Mescalero Apache program before returning to Roswell for additional tours and a Rotary program.

County Schools Win Long Fight

The New Mexico Board of Education voted 6 to 3 to create an independent district from Chaves County schools ending weeks of stalemate. Charles Murphy switched his position on the proposal. An Oct 19 election date was set for a five member board and an interim three member panel was named to oversee it.

Roswell Realtor Donald B. Anderson Named Citizen of the Year

Roswell businessman and civic leader Donald B. Anderson was named Citizen of the Year by the Roswell Board of Realtors at a board breakfast. Roswell Soldier Buried in Viet Nam War Loss, Father of Baby Born

Lavon Wilson, Army Sp4, died Feb 10 in a Qui Nhon bombing. His widow Marie Wilson remains with her mother in Roswell as their infant son Lavon Jr. is born at Walker Air Force Base Hospital. The soldier’s final letters praised his family and foretold the danger.

NM Chief Justice cites need for new Court of Appeals to ease delays

Chief Justice David W. Carmody told the Chaves County Bar Association that New Mexico needs a proposed Amendment 5 to create a limited Court of Appeals. Price-Fixing Fines Levied Against GE and Westinghouse

A federal judge ordered nearly 17 million dollars in damages against General Electric Co and Westinghouse Electric Corp for a 20 year price fixing conspiracy. Ohio Valley Electric Corp and Indiana Kentucky Electric Corp were overcharged for 11 steam turbine generators bought in 1952, with tripled damages awarded totaling 7,424,373 and 9,448,830 respectively.
