Union Carbide Corp announces a major company wide reorganization cutting 4000 white collar positions and instituting safety improvements. The overhaul aims to save about 300 million dollars despite a hostile takeover bid. conducted amid ongoing poison gas leak concerns.
Police killed five black men in Guguleto as about 2000 demonstrators tried to reach the prison where Nelson Mandela is jailed. Riot police and soldiers blocked streets, used clubs and tear gas. dozens injured and 27 arrested amid multi race protests against apartheid.
KNC Inc announced blasting will resume in the 1500 to 1600 blocks of West Fourth Street as rock formations delay installing the North Spring River Interceptor. Project manager Tom Dawson said blasting will be limited to areas where rock cannot be removed by conventional methods and will be tightly supervised under ATF regulations. City Engineer Al Cates noted inspections continue.
NASA officials in Houston announced a second spacewalk for Discovery astronauts to fix the crippled Syncom 3 satellite. Ground tests showed the robot arm cannot complete repairs quickly enough, so two 64 hour EVAs are planned instead of a single 6 hour 50 minute walk.
