Europe watches as Belgium and Netherlands offer mediation while Prime Minister Chamberlain states Britain will stand by Poland. Hitler's reply, awaited in London and Berlin, could shift toward negotiation or war. Berlin hopeful for settlement, Britain's fleet ready, Poland vigil and calm.
Roswell High School registrar Paul H. Deaton announced 510 students are enrolled for the coming term, the largest pre school enrollment to date. Last year 480 enrolled. The 1939-40 year begins next Tuesday September 5. New students and those who did not register last spring may continue registering all week including Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the principal's office. Free texts include Ninth Grade Citizenship Algebra English Grammar and various high school histories and government. Books to be purchased include all commercial subjects literatures advanced algebra solid geometry trigonometry and all sciences.
War dispatches report Premier Josef Tišo proclaims martial law in supposedly independent Slovakia. Notices call for Slovaks to face German military courts, supply food for the German army, and accept German currency. United States embassy officials note over 2000 Americans cannot depart, with many tickets canceled. Swiss borders to be partially closed per Bern dispatch.
Archbishop R A Gerken of Santa Fe opened the ninth annual Santa Fe Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women convention at the Roswell Woman's Club. The two day event features a program on Our Youth and a greetings message from Agnes Regan national secretary of the National Council of Catholic Women.
Humble Company, Texas largest crude purchaser, restored higher postings today due to changes in conditions. The move makes August 11 retroactive and follows Sinclair Prairie’s prior price cut of 5 to 32 cents a barrel in Texas and New Mexico fields. Republic Oil Refining group lines also advanced prices by 15 cents a barrel.
Robert L. Ball of Roswell is on track to earn the Master of Photography degree from the Photographers Association of America within two years. The degree, highly rare, requires 25 merits. Ball has 16, including five from the Buffalo convention and a sixth for attending as New Mexico’s representative. Ball’s five salon portraits were hung, among 1,000 chosen from 30,000 prints, and five Ball photos joined Eastman Kodak Company's exhibit. Ball and wife have returned to Roswell after the convention and a New York visit.
Tokyo aug 29 general Nobuyuki Abe announced his new cabinet lineup signaling an isolationist foreign policy and retaining the foreign affairs portfolio. Shunroku Hata becomes war minister while Zengo Yoshida takes the navy portfolio. Shigemitsu was not named foreign minister, and Rome Berlin faction shifts were expected. The outgoing Hiranuma cabinet discussed Manchukuo border clashes with Mongolia as Mongol forces resisted along the Khalka river. Adolf Hitler handed to the British ambassador Henderson Germanys reply to Britains position on the German Polish crisis. Chamberlain affirmed Britain will stand by Poland and keep its fleet ready as tensions with Hitler escalate.
Tonight at 7 30 the Chamber of Commerce hosts a meeting on the Trio Chest drive. W J McInnes, last year’s chairman, calls for a full report and plans for this year. All Boy Scouts Girl Scouts and Salvation Army subscribers urged to attend to decide whether to continue the Trio Chest or revert to separate drives.
Warsaw reports a wave of subversive acts blamed on Germany as Poles condemn Hitler claims of German victims in Poland. Seven killed in Tarnow railroad station explosion. two Germans arrested. A Breslau student, Herbert Frendel, allegedly confessed to leaving a bag that exploded in Biala, Silesia. A time bomb was found on a rail line between Klaj and Krakow before detonation. Polish papers denounce German accusations as propaganda to justify aggression.
Boston Bees defeated St. Louis 2 to 1 as Dick Errickson pitched the full game. The Cardinals dropped five and a half games behind the Reds. Final line score shows St. Louis 001 000 000 and Boston 100 010 000 with Errickson earning the win and Lopez catching.
Detroit scores in last at bat to beat New York 7 to 6 ending the Yankees ten game win streak. Boston tops Cleveland 7 to 4 behind Ted Williams bases loaded homer. Weather: New Mexico and Colorado partly cloudy with showers in spots. Arizona and West Texas fair.
A man tentatively identified as Elgen Babb was found dead near railroad tracks at Logan, about a day after he rode a freight out of Tucumcari and complained of illness. County officials sought to contact relatives in Los Angeles.

Border conference commission er Emil Larson announced that conference football coaches and 40 gridiron officials will gather in Tucson on Saturday and Sunday to discuss the coming season and approve a list of officials.
A U S federal grand jury in Albuquerque completed a week of work with 48 true bills, four held, and one bank robbery case naming Richard Lizarrago and Troia Sturdevant. Witnesses included former governor Clyde Tingley and Hub Kane as jurors, while other pleas involved auto theft and a post office burglary.
New York reports that American marine underwriters have canceled all war risk insurance for German and Italian ships. The policy removal also covers shipments to from transshipped or calling at Italian or German ports, signaling a broad tightening of coverage amid wartime tensions.
