Fewer Mexican students at Deming schools due to immigration law
Deming High School principal Hector Madrid noted many Mexican students missing as a result of the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform Act. The law restricts F-1 visas for kindergarten through eighth grade, while ninth to twelfth graders may receive one-year nonrenewable F-1 visas after paying full public education costs. INS spokesperson Jesus Placencia said about 60 students crossed the border to attend Deming and Columbus schools on Aug. 14, with five on F-1 visas.
