Crime in Roswell increased 10.6 percent from January to July 1974 versus the same period in 1973. Petty larcenies surged 117.1 percent while overall cases solved by the Roswell Police Department rose 60.2 percent.
President Ford seeks broad backing for a full term by meeting congresswomen, mayors, governors, and union leaders. He signs an $11.9 billion Housing Act and later a $25 billion HEW education measure, praise from the congressional Black Caucus, and photographs with GOP candidates. The day includes a tribute for Ambassador Davies whose body returned from Cyprus.
In Chaves County the June wedding month leads annually with 75 marriages this year, though not always. 1972 favored August with 82 and 1971 saw December at 75. Former Hobbs district court judge Kermit Nash, 66, died Wednesday night at Lubbock Methodist Memorial Hospital after a recent operation. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday in Hobbs. Nash was treated for cancer.
The House Judiciary Committee’s final impeachment inquiry report states former President Richard Nixon violated criminal law and his oath by directing the Watergate cover up and abusing powers. It notes 22 false statements and ongoing deception, with Nixon having resigned on August 9. The 523 page document outlines break in and cover up and names Haldeman Ehrlichman and Mitchell as defendants.
