A Carlsbad woman received a 15 year suspended sentence in District Court for attempting to fill a forged prescription. The item appears in the Daily Record Roswell edition on Page 3.
President Carter named Vice President Mondale to oversee Middle East policy amid a crisis in the peace process. Mondale, meeting with Strauss Vance Brzezinski, heard Strauss report on Cairo and Jerusalem talks and discussed a UN framework for Palestinian rights.
Norma Glover Smith was elected chairman of the Glover Inc. board while R L Nunes bought 21 percent of shares and became director and president. Nunes brings 25 years in meat packing and plans to expand processed meats from 300 000 to 700 000 pounds weekly over six months. Plant will shift to two shifts adding about 8 jobs and reduce odor concerns after improving rendering operations.
Pravda accuses Washington of stalling demilitarization talks on the Indian Ocean while Brezhnev and Carter agreed to push ahead at Vienna. In Beirut Israeli forces said to strike Kafr Alhaamam killing eight and wounding 19 amid a broader clash. FEC clears Carter campaign over finance but flags the Rafshoon agency credit of 645000 dollars.
Roswell city council gutted key charter provisions after more than an hour of debate. Referendum on budget items was eliminated with one dissent, while a two thirds margin now allows voters to overturn ordinances. Property purchases were removed from referendum. The charter returns to the Charter Commission for changes. A hearing date for the charter election was moved to Sept. 21.
