President Nixon's New Orleans motorcade was scrapped after Secret Service detected a possible conspiracy to assassinate him during a Florida to New Orleans visit for a Veterans of Foreign Wars convention. Police were asked to arrest a former officer identified as Edward Gaudet alias Punchy, tied to earlier incidents and prior Nixon era arrests.
At the Eastern New Mexico State Fair Grounds a dirt strip hosted horse and mule events amid dust and sun. Bert the mule rode by Rance Puckett won the mile long mule race, with other results listed including Suzie Irvin on Nicky Blair and Bill Nelson on Chudy's Touch in the 250 yard events and various open pony and saddle relay results.
Roswell celebrates 100th birthday with a lively program in downtown including booths children's parade and bands. An estimated 2000 attended Sunday horse and mule races near the fair grounds. Events feature a queen contest U S Air Force Band fiddlers and rock and western acts plus a parade and old time film showtimes listed for the week.
U S Attorney Beall in Baltimore reportedly secured a diary of kickbacks kept by a former Agnew aide. The diary allegedly links Maryland political figures to payoffs, according to the New York Daily News.
President Nixon acknowledged ordering secret bombing raids in Cambodia in 1969, one month after taking office. He told the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention the raids were needed to protect American lives and would be repeated if faced again, noting 40,000 North Vietnamese troops had advanced near the border.

Streets from Third to Fifth on Main and Richardson Ave close 5 30 p m to midnight while Second and Sixth Streets and Virginia and Pennsylvania remain open.
Arizona State University and the University of Arizona eased dorm rules to compete with apartments, offering homelike living and stable rates. Northern Arizona University bucked the trend with lower occupancy as policies remain stricter.

Began told investigators he had been kidnapped by the Mafia, transported to the United States, and later released after promising not to pursue Mafia stories. He said he escaped and warned his wife in a telephone call. doctors said he is exhausted and needs rest.
