Water levels in Chaves County recorder wells show little change from last year through August with an average for 1970 of 83.87 feet against 83.18 for the same period in 1969 and 71.99 in 1968. Some wells run higher than last year, while most remain lower in surface distance, indicating basin stabilization.

Tropical Storm Dorothy formed in the Atlantic building to 65 mph and likely to reach the Leeward Islands early Thursday as a hurricane. Forecaster Neil Frank warned of a strong storm while warnings and a hurricane watch were issued for Dominica northward. Dorothy was centered about 500 miles east southeast of Guadeloupe, moving west northwest at 15 mph.
