Tragedy as car sinks with children at Lake Sunapee

SANTA FE AP A proposal to eliminate separate boards of regents for the state's major colleges is among proposals discussed by the Governor's Committee on Reorganization of State Government. Rep John Mershon said the state is priced out of quality education and may not finance education. A student report notes over 32 million will be spent by seven colleges in the coming year versus 6 million 15 years ago. Alternatives include unifying seven institutions under a University of New Mexico system with one board and separate chancellors or creating a nine member Department of Higher Education including one member from each current board. The BEF would be eliminated or strengthened to control university operations.
