Man Held Bat Used To Kill Airman At Walker AFB

A 23-year old Airman William C. Hunt died after being struck by a baseball bat near Sunset Cafe in East Walnut Street. Suspect Jeff Brewster Jr., 19, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. he is held without bail. Hunt, a digital repairman in the Sixth Space Wing, died seven hours after the incident. Funeral plans pending.

Los Alamos scientists die in fall near Aspen

Three senior Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory scientists died in a fall on South Maroon Peak west of Aspen. The injured William B. Martin, another lab employee, was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital. Dr. Donald W. McEachern accompanied the party. he was unharmed. The victims were Frank E. Pretzel 44 an organic chemist Dr. Herbert E. Ungnade 54 and Robert B. Day 42.

Roswell Wins Junior Legion Tourney Final 8-1

Roswell defeated Albuquerque Manzano 8-1 to clinch the New Mexico Junior American Legion baseball tournament title. Mike Mitchell drove in two runs, stole home, and finished 4 for 5 with two RBIs as Roswell opened a four-run third inning. Ron Sparkman earned the win, while Manzano’s rally capable lineup managed only four hits. Roswell advances to the regional tournament in Roswell this weekend.

Transwestern to Build New Line Out of Roswell

Transwestern Pipeline Co plans a 35.2 mile 24 inch line from a Roswell compressor site and a 1000 hp gas turbine compressor in a 3.391 million project to link with Natural Gas Pipeline Co of America. The line will run east to a Nat Gas line junction as part of a 435 million gas exchange program approved by the Power Commission. Natural Gas will deliver up to 130 million cubic feet daily to Transwestern in Eddy and Roosevelt Counties.

Viet Cong attack hits Saigon police HQ in deadly blast

Viet Cong terrorists drove a jeep and car loaded with explosives into South Viet Nam's national police headquarters in Saigon. Four policemen were killed and about 20 injured, possibly including six Americans. Two accomplices spoke to a guard while others fired, then attackers fled under cover of gunfire. The blast damaged Col. Pham Van Lieu's home next to the headquarters, and U.S. sources linked the attack to heightened Saigon police activity. This was Saigon's first serious terrorist incident in seven weeks.
