Cuba moves from revolution to reconstruction as de Cespedes forms a cabinet for social and economic rehabilitation. U.S. warships arrive with no intent to intervene, guards protect citizens, while violence declines but sporadic clashes continue.
Hankow China August 14 AP growing fears over Yellow river flood near Szeshui. Area 50 miles wide from Kungshien to Szeshui and Chengchow submerged with potential loss of life totaling several thousand. Enormous property damage. north east of Chengchow reports similar conditions. River could change course inundating more territory including large towns. Floods began late June from heavy rains at headwaters.
Funeral services for J. Smith Lea pioneer resident of Roswell will be held tomorrow afternoon at Ballard Funeral Home at three o'clock with Rev. C. C. Hill in charge. Music by the First Christian Church choir under Mrs. R. D. Jones. Knights Templar escort and Masonic services at the cemetery led by John Hall. Pallbearers named Claude Hobbs J. F. Hinkle Harry Thorne Lyman Sanders Thomas J. Hall Frank Strickland. Nephews Horace Wilbur and Fred Burnett arriving from Lone Wolf Oklahoma. Alfred Swan Burnett expected from Del Rio Tennessee. Lea formerly treasurer of Roswell I O C F Lodge.
In Santa Fe a broad alarm over kidnappings and gang activity led Gov. Seligman to summon law enforcement leaders including Brig. Gen. Mood and Warden Swope. Sheriff Baca to investigate alleged gang hideouts, while National Guard support could be called to ease fear. Police will monitor camps and hotels as citizens report hourly dread for children and self.
Chaves County commissioners voted to call a local option liquor election on September 19, following a petition with about 760 signatures. The move aims to determine whether alcohol sales are permitted in the county under the 1933 New Mexico law, with legal questions to be resolved by the courts.
Gallup New Mexico August 14 AP Edward S McGrady NRA assistant advised city officials the government was not sure of the affiliation of the National Miners Union amid plans for drastic action over alleged communistic ties The town board denied organizers permission for a benefit dance prompting a mass meeting with about a thousand miners urging union enrollment to protect against coal operators The Gallup American Coal Company mines operate open shop under Nevada Consolidated Copper Company but no disorders occurred and Mayor Watson said no further action was taken by the city.
The average price of a pound loaf of white bread rose about 1.4 cents from February 15 to August 2 across 16 cities. Dr. Fred C. Howe notes production costs and loaf weight changes affect the figure. El Paso shows 8.8 cents per pound with no February figure.

Washington August 14 AP A 56 hour work week plan was proposed by the National Association of Retail Druggists in a code of fair competition for recovery administration. Stores would open at least 52 hours weekly unless they operated under 52 hours before July 1, 1933. Registered executive pharmacists are exempt from the 56 hour rule. Minimum wages range from 13 to 14 dollars in communities of 2500 to 250000 population with regional differences.
In San Francisco on August 14 AP reports a 21 year old father Frank Fabian Jr a physical culture instructor led police to his month old illegitimate daughter's body hidden beneath joists in his home. He admitted taking the child from an institution Saturday and slashing its throat claiming a troubled conscience prompted the confession.
A Roswell man lists the U S district court grand jurors called for service on August 28. The roster includes James B. Thompson Albuquerque Teofilo Chavez Socorro Paul Harberg Las Vegas Vincent Caulfield Silver City William Wickham Mosquero and many others across New Mexico towns.
National League and American League scores report Philadelphia edge Cleveland 11 to 7 with rains halting play in New York Philadelphia game. Boston 5 FAO 4, Pipgras and Hogsett pitching. Camp Sacramento closes as the Huffman boys camp ends its eight week session. Mr Huffman praises a successful year with ten boys attending all eight weeks.

Judge C. R. Brice departs Washington for Roswell to advance refinancing of Roswell Hagerman and Dexter Greenfield Drainage districts through the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. Officials hold the three district applications, each about ten pounds, with all required data.
The first meeting of the United States Reemployment Service local committee for Chaves County elected Col. Harry Andrew as chairman and Dr. H. A. Ingalls as vice-chairman with Mrs. L. O. Fullen as secretary. Waite J. Keeney named state director. Two registration sites were set: Spring & Forging Co. in the north and B and B Filling Station in Hagerman, with lists to open after state instructions.
John W Milne superintendent of Albuquerque schools with E W Little and George Mitchell discussed reconstruction of an Albuquerque school funded by the federal public works board. The group also conferred with Oscar Moore on distribution of free texts for use in the schools.
