Five freshmen senators including Pete Domenici and Sam Nunn urged an economic summit to combat inflation. Ford pressed Congress to act within 10 days to revive wage and price monitoring tools while pledging a balanced budget and stronger defense. The president spoke to a full House about revving up the country and sought bipartisan support for tough cost-cutting measures.
The Ford Administration backs a tax targeting oil windfall profits while not hindering production. A Senate panel heard a plan proposed by Ford to reactivate the Cost of Living Council to monitor wages and prices. Ford also criticized General Motors for a 9.5 percent price rise on 1975 model cars and trucks.
Ross L. Roswell native and General Motors general counsel Ross Malone died at age 62. He led the ABA as president in 1958 and served on multiple legal and civic boards, including Washington and Lee University trustees and the New Mexico Bar Examiners. Survivors include his wife Elizabeth Amis and three Roswell brothers.
U S Rep Runnels and fellow lawmakers praised President Ford after his joint session speech. Domenici welcomed the call for a new era in policy and a summit, while Manuel Lujan agreed Ford set a constructive tone for the administration.
International Minerals and Chemical Corp plans a 35 million expansion at the Carlsbad mine and refinery to nearly double langbeinite potash production used as animal feed and fertilizer. Engineering is underway with completion hoped soon. new underground reserves and above ground facilities will boost capacity to meet global plant nutrient demand.
