The New York Dry Goods Store closes today for a major sale to run a 10 day event. Twenty thousand dollars worth of dry foods shoes and clothing will be offered as forty clerks prepare to serve crowds. Thousands expected from across the country at this notable Roswell sale.
Paris Aug 13 William Jennings Bryan issues a statement demanding Roger Sullivan resign from the National Committee contending Sullivan and John Hopkins robbed Illinois Democrats of political rights. Sullivan replies Bryan misinformed and Bryan insists the fight purify the party. Bryan praises Majority Rule League figures Dunlap Rainey Thompson Nelson. Chicago Aug 18 Sullivan says Bryan’s claim lacks merit and that he receives all information from Dunlap.
The Parlor Barber Shop plans a relocation on September first from 214 North Main to 222 North Main into the building formerly occupied by H Williams & Co just south of First National Bank. Baptists report large Lincoln Association convention with 35 messengers and net 50 new members across three NM associations. Reverend Vermillion preached at an open air union service in Carlsbad.
W. W. Pitts has bought Bert C. Smith's share in Pitts and Smith Machine Shop and Automobile Garage on the east side of S. Main Street. The shop offers complete services for gas and gasoline engines, pumps, pulleys, shafting, steam engines, boilers, and plant installations. New engines, parts, and supplies are on hand, with guaranteed first class work and reasonable automobile garage rentals. Agency for Auto Car Equipment Co. and specialty in heavy high power cars and transfer trucks.

Washington reports inventories are to be taken of contractor outfits seized by the Geological Survey at Corbett Tunnel and Shoshone Dam. Plans to complete these large northern Wyoming irrigation contracts will be considered as the inventories are processed. The message notes Speer at Corbett Tunnel and Pendergast & Clark are in jeopardy if conditions worsen. In Texas a dispatch about Lt J L Smith of the New Mexico cavalry misreads an accident during maneuvers, describing a saddle girdle failure that left him unconscious but later improving.
Advance fall styles in ladies hats showcased by Welch Millinery Company near Grand Central Hotel. Local social notes include Mrs. W. E. McCrory and Joe McCrory visiting Roswell after recovery from fever, from Hannibal Missouri.
A party of eighteen organized a new Eastern Star Chapter in Hagerman with 17 charter members. Mrs. Mason was elected Worthy Matron, Mrs. Mills Associate Matron, and Mrs. Farnsworth secretary. Visitors enjoyed a chicken supper after the ceremony. Roswell Chapter officers demonstrated the work. The Grand Lodge will institute another lodge in Artesia tonight.
Alexander R. Chisholm paying teller at First National Bank confessed to a $100000 shortage after a vacation break. He was bonded for $40000 and turned over $3000 to authorities. Accused co-conspirators were named among brokers implicated in alleged speculation.
Robt. Ingersoll buys and sells railroad tickets. Willis Ford returned from a business trip to Kansas City and headed for another trip. Dr. George A. Lipp livestock inspector went to Portales. Dr. C. E. Lukens preached in Dayton. D. G. Hall and R. T. Hunt came from Acme to stay with families in Roswell. H. P. Hobson returned from Portales for Roswell Creamery work. Mrs. P. D. Smith and three daughters left for Pecos after a week with Mrs. Hale. J. W. Wilson went to Artesia on a short business trip.
O. W. Roderick arrived Saturday evening from Denton Texas. Mrs. Zella Mounts departed Saturday for an extended visit to Kansas City. Woodworking work completed at a Texas shop.

Charles Whiteman writes from Austin Texas that Lieutenant Aubrey Smith was seriously hurt during militia encampment field maneuvers Friday. His horse fell with him in a battery charge and he was run over. he is expected to be brought home with the others.
