Heroin Use Rising Among Santa Fe Youth
In Santa Fe, heroin addiction among young people is increasing as many begin with prescription pain meds. Millennium Treatment Services reports a shift from five or fewer heroin addicts two years ago to about a quarter of 80 to 100 patients now being opiate addicts aged 18 to 25. Drug Court officials note rising opiate participation, with 28 percent in 2007, 46 percent in 2009, and 65 percent in 2011, and discuss budget limits constraining treatment slots.
