Fed's low rates hurt retirees and pensions, warns exam
The Fed plans to keep rates near zero for two years, helping mortgage refinancers but harming retirees reliant on interest income. Pension funds faced a $254 billion shortfall by July 31, rising from $186 billion, with low rates blamed. Mortgage rates fell to record lows while homebuying stalls persist amid weak markets. Some retirees shift to stock dividends for yield as inflation outpaces gains. The Fed pledge highlights risks of an all-conservative income strategy.
