Supt Shinkle releases the Roswell public school system staff for the coming year detailing administration teaching and support roles. The roster includes superintendent James D Shinkle senior staff and many department heads plus principals at junior and senior high levels.
British and German air forces clashed in the Channel and southeast coast convoys. The British claimed 53 German planes shot down and 16 pilots missing after a major engagement. German reports said 34 British planes were downed and several ships sunk. Britain bombed Kiel and Cherbourg as night raids continued along the coast.
The Senate moved the militia mobilization bill toward passage after a close 47 to 36 vote on an amendment allowing guardsmen and reserves 20 days post passage to quit. Senator Barkley pressed for a quick roll call while administration and opposition factions argued over conscription and service in emergencies.
The Ninth Annual Retreat begins Friday evening August 16 in Albuquerque at 8 o clock and runs to Monday morning August 19 with Mass at 8. He urged all creeds to join in prayer as news of suffering abroad continues to mount. The proclamation, dated yesterday, was released from his Hudson Valley estate.
A tropical hurricane weakened inland after killing at least one person and injuring ten in the Sabine area of Texas and Louisiana. Winds of 75 miles per hour battered Port Arthur Orange and Beaumont, with unroofed houses uprooted trees and downed lines. Damage was estimated at Port Arthur about 100000 dollars and rice crops in Jefferson County may reach 500000.

American Airlines reported stewardess Rosemary Griffith was struck and robbed of a baggage room key on a transcontinental sky sleeper near Nashville. She swallowed the key after a assailant demanded it, was treated for head and body injuries, and the aircraft was grounded while passengers were rebooked. An unidentified passenger noted her absence and described a dazed behavior before the incident.
James Cruse Morris of Artesia and Bebe Burl Coffman of Roswell received a marriage license. The filing details indicate a union between two residents seeking matrimony. Officials recorded the license in the local civil registry.

Roosevelt’s note preceded a planned briefing with Wallace and Hopkins.

Six people died in a gasoline explosion in a Las Vegas residential area as firefighters fought nine others hurt. Victims included Thomas Myers wife Kathleen and four Myers children Linda Teddy Daren Eva Megrette in the yard and kitchen. Myers and two more children remained critically injured as a neighbor child was unhurt. A sheet of flame blasted from truck tanks, breaking windows up to half a mile away.
An overnight storm between 2 and 3 am caused minor damage in Roswell area with transformer failures from lightning, no major circuit trouble, and repairs expected by noon.
