Britons Repel Channel Luftwaffe Attacks In Big Air Fight

British and German air forces clashed in the Channel and southeast coast convoys. The British claimed 53 German planes shot down and 16 pilots missing after a major engagement. German reports said 34 British planes were downed and several ships sunk. Britain bombed Kiel and Cherbourg as night raids continued along the coast.

Guard Bill Nears Final Senate Vote Amid Amendment Clash

The Senate moved the militia mobilization bill toward passage after a close 47 to 36 vote on an amendment allowing guardsmen and reserves 20 days post passage to quit. Senator Barkley pressed for a quick roll call while administration and opposition factions argued over conscription and service in emergencies.

Ninth Annual Retreat Opens in Albuquerque Aug 16

The Ninth Annual Retreat begins Friday evening August 16 in Albuquerque at 8 o clock and runs to Monday morning August 19 with Mass at 8. American Airlines reported stewardess Rosemary Griffith was struck and robbed of a baggage room key on a transcontinental sky sleeper near Nashville.
