LAS CRUCES New Mexico August 7 A search for Mrs Geraldine Goodin Miller 28 missing since Saturday ended with a posse of over 100 enrollees and citizens failing to locate her Body watchers were instructed to monitor canals the Rio Grande and desert areas for possible body or clues A motorist or ill health were considered theories and her husband Woodrow Miles of Tucumcari noted the family has a 10 month old baby She is granddaughter of cattleman D J Isaacks
Frank Strickland, a longtime southeastern New Mexico rancher and cattle inspector, died at 2 45 PM at his Roswell home. Born August 21 1871 in Texas, he moved to Elk in 1890, later managed the L E ranch east of Roswell and owned a north Roswell ranch. Survived by wife Georgia Reeves and five sons, including Lyman, Lamar and Earl Strickland, he was a prominent figure among stockmen and an active Mason.
In the first game of a doubleheader the Pirates beat the Cardinals 10 to 9. Johnny Mize hit his 32nd homer and Arky Vaughan added his sixth. Various pitchers noted for both teams as the night games around the circuit were listed.
Boston Red Sox erased a deficit and beat the New York Yankees 10 to 7 as Jack Wilson closed the ninth inning rally. Bobby Doerr and Joe Cronin homered for Boston while Joe DiMaggio homered for New York.
Port Arthur Texas residents flee in mass as hurricane winds around 90 mph threaten the coast from Port Arthur to Sabine. The New Orleans weather bureau says the tropical storm center will cross Sabine Lake within hours, with winds 70 to 80 mph at Port Arthur and about 70 mph at Beaumont. Police cleared peach settlements and a gust tore the weather bureau’s shelter.

Senator Dennis Chavez plans a full dress opening of his Democratic senatorial campaign in New Mexico this week. His manager in Santa Fe confirmed he would be in the state this weekend as opponent J J Dempsey prepared a radio speech to begin his own campaign. Leyva did not detail Chavez’s travel plans while announcing Chavez club rallies in Taos and Thursday in the state.

Washington Aug 7 Senators move to adopt a Burke Wadsworth bill authorizing Roosevelt to call the national guard and officers reserve for training. The house military committee adds five witnesses headed by secretary Knox to testify. The measure includes a 20 day post enactment window for resignations and possible conscription. Senator Dannaher cites guardsmen who enlisted thinking peacetime service would not occur.
Washington August 7 An excess profits tax bill was offered to Congress by a House subcommittee to raise 300 million to 500 million a year from corporate earnings under the defense program. The levy would range 25 to 40 percent on portions of industrial profits with a 20 percent annual deduction for defense plant expansion over five years. Joint hearings start Friday, possibly wrapping in three or four days to speed action.

A picnic lunch is planned at the Boy Scout Hut at 7 p.m. next week, replacing the regular meeting. The vice president Andrew Kemper presided in Joe Huff’s absence.
Gov. Payne Ratner, 43, secured the Republican nomination with 150,935 votes, defeating Jay Welch and C. D. Lank in 2,130 of 2,735 precincts. Democrat William H. Burke, 61, won over S. L. Mathews with 63,705 votes in 2,080 precincts. Kansans renominate all seven congressmen, with U. S. Guyer defeating Chloe Mattemson in race opposition.
