The Agriculture Department projects an 11 412 000 bale cotton crop for this year based on conditions as of August 1 and the harvested acreage. The area cultivated was 24 424 000 acres, below the ten year average abandonment, compared with 24 248 000 harvested acres producing 11 943 000 bales last year.
A Roswell American Legion delegation led by post commander Reed Mulkey travels to Lordsburg for the New Mexico Department convention to back Wayne Drysdale for department commander. Drysdale, a former Roswell post commander, aims to secure votes with a party estimated at 20 to 25 Roswell members. The election is on Saturday, after Drysdale leaves for Lordsburg today and the Roswell group travels over tomorrow.
President Roosevelt arrived at Hyde Park and began three weeks away from Washington to work on about 200 last minute bills. He planned a New England coast cruise aboard the Tuscaloosa after a stay at his Dutchess County home. He issued a statement praising liberal gains in the Supreme Court controversy as he signed a bill creating an administrative officer to oversee federal courts and noted the seventh objective had been achieved through the court itself.
Lieutenant Governor Keen Johnson led Democratic gubernatorial hopeful John Young Brown by about 25 000 votes in unofficial county results from Kentucky primaries. Johnson 198 753 to Brown 173 851 as 2992 of 4307 precincts reported. Republican leader King Swope held a wide lead over John Sherman Cooper in early returns, 75 916 to 49 429 from 2776 precincts. Swope sought the 1935 GOP nomination bid.
Washington August 8 House Republicans aim to present a definite program on housing agriculture and reciprocal trade agreements as alternatives to administration measures for the 1940 session. Minority Leader Martin plans special committees to study each subject and craft legislation. Rayburn counters that Republicans have offered no substitute and seek to return to the old order with favors for the few.
Secretary of commerce Hopkins said July actions mark a continuation of a recovery movement with activity ahead of a year ago across major lines. He cited improved third quarter prospects, expanded wholesale commitments, growing industrial purchasing, and gains in clothing orders. Construction peaked seasonally with industrial activity above 1937 summer levels, while July retail trade and durable goods purchases rose. Freight movement outpaced seasonal expectations, steel output climbed to 60 percent capacity, and auto production lagged briefly due to model changes as 1940 preparations begin.
Hobbs New Mexico August reports the city council ordered court action against state comptroller C R Sebastian after an audit began March 2. Assistant state comptroller J D Hannah declined comment while in Santa Fe awaiting Sebastians return from Seattle for a national convention.
During the session’s final week Congress passed a bill authorizing preliminary surveys of 38 potential flood control projects and amending prior flood bills. The measure, now to the White House, allows up to 300000 dollars per year to remove snags and clear streams for flood control and enables examinations and reports on projects. It also designates the Alamogordo dam and reservoir on the Pecos river in New Mexico as a flood control project and credits the Carlsbad irrigation district with allowable project-cost repayment.
Aug 8 dispatch from Shanghai notes a courier fled Chengchow hospital attempting to cross Japanese lines toward Kaifeng as anti American campaigns surge. Reports say Kaifeng demonstrations drew large crowds outside American establishments while two missionaries in Shansi were forced from Hwohsien.
SANTA FE New Mexico Aug 8 Official brake and light testing stations face tighter rules to enforce three annual vehicle inspections. Beginning with the last inspection of the year Aug 21 to Sept 15 stations will receive stickers from the motor vehicle division and must keep records of issued stickers and inspected vehicles. Stickers will have a facsimile signature of J O Gallegos to deter counterfeits Stations without a brake testing machine must provide an open floor space at least 10 by 60 feet and two open sides. Each station must have a standard headlight adjusting chart though a headlight candlepower machine may be used.
Officials of the house committee investigating un American activities said hearings would resume on August 16 with details on witnesses and topics not disclosed. Previous statements hinted at testimony concerning an anti semitic group in New York. Santa Fe hosts New Mexico Junior Bar Association events in August with Ross L. Malone Jr. as chairman.
In Uvalde Texas on August 8 Vice President Garner returned from Washington after a long absence. He visited his home, checked the grounds and poultry, and sought fish reports with his fishing partner Ross Brumfield. He avoided discussing governmental affairs or presidential prospects. He remarked on a peach tree and joked about drought reports as neighbors gathered.
Prague reports Czechs have revived a hidden resistance to oppose the Nazi protectorate over Bohemia and Moravia, recruiting for a Czech legion in Poland. In the United States 1,600,000 Czechs aid the cause from Chicago, Cleveland, New York and Pittsburgh while Benes urged democracy’s victory as Europe’s path to Czech freedom. Consulates in capitals remain open, with acting consul general Hudic saying the Prague legation will continue indefinitely.
Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 7 to 3 in the first game as Bucky Walters faltered in four innings for his 20th loss in 23 starts. Augie Galan homered in the fourth, Bill Lee earned his 13th win, and Ival Goodman returned from injury. Harry Craft suffered a neck injury in a collision and was hospitalized after the opener.
Southwestern Rotarians concluded a two day assembly at Hot Springs New Mexico selecting the 1940 convention city. Over 95 delegates attended the final session after a banquet at Elephant Butte Lodge. All 31 clubs were represented except Sanderson Texas. Jal New Mexico was added to the district roster with international approval. Speakers included Jack Sheehan Charles Graham and D C Pearson.
The California chamber of commerce urged New Mexico Arizona and Oregon to close motor vehicle registration stations. California closed its stations August 1, while New Mexico defends its system noting tourists face no delays and that stations have not operated for two years.
In Boston on August 8, Jimmy Foxx hit two homers off Bob Joyce to lift the Red Sox over the Philadelphia Athletics 9 to 2. Lefty Grove earned his 12th win of the season, with Boston building a decisive late surge after a tight contest.
Assistant district attorney G L Reese said a district court charge of aiding prisoners to escape will be filed against Jose Espinosa in Roswell. Espinosa allegedly had a jail key and aided a May escape. He also faces drunk driving charges after a rollover crash at East McGaffey and 4 30 this morning. He has prior penitentiary time for theft.
Polish and German newspapers traded sharp rhetoric over Danzig amid European military drills. The Berlin press echoed official lines after a Warsaw Czas editorial warned guns face Danzig, while Danzig leader Albert Forster reportedly lands near Salzburg. Warsaw said Dan zig frontier officers were ordered to wear uniforms and bear rifles. Britain rehearsed anti aircraft defences as mock enemy bombers approach.
