The Eastern New Mexico State Fair opens with a new costume contest offering 317.50 in seven divisions. Manuel F. Moseley oversees the event, urging Roswell residents to wear cowboy regalia from September 10. Rules require entrants to walk or ride, with no commercial ads on costumes and prizes for Conquistadors, Billy the Kid, Senoritas, and Caballeros categories.
Hunter and Humphrey Moody set a light plane endurance record flying their Taylorcraft Miss Springfield for 343 hours 46 minutes after July 23, landing at Springfield Municipal Airport. They slept aloft, refueled with a weighted rope, and traveled about 25 000 miles within 100 miles of the city before rain and storm forced return.

The premium book of the 1939 Roswell fair is off the press with 5000 copies produced. Distribution includes 3500 mailed to exhibitors and communities across 22 NM and West TX counties, 1000 to county agents, and 500 for Roswell use. Premiums total 3500 dollars, boosted by new divisions, with a balanced program highlighting agriculture and livestock and inviting participation from farmers, stockmen, and urban residents alike.
In Washington on August 7, New Mexico figures Sen. Carl A. Hatch and Rep. John J. Dempsey led a pivotal drive to shape the Hatch measure separating politics from relief. They allegedly received 67,000 dollars each in a conspiracy to move Louisiana oil through Texas to Italy and other foreign markets in 1936 and 1937. Freeman Burford and East Texas Refinery Company were charged in the same scheme. Bonds set at 5,000 for Leche and Weiss and 15,000 for Weiss. all appeared, declined comment.

A head on collision near Belen claimed the infant son of Mrs. Rosa Mechler and injured his mother and Lt. George Lange. Albuquerque residents Ramon Sanchez and wife escaped with minor burns when their truck caught fire near Pecos. An Oklahoma traveler Mrs. D C Callahan suffered a fractured collar bone in a crash near Albuquerque.
