Across Albany a department store at 39 41 North Pearl Street collapsed trapping hundreds of workers, with initial death toll rising and dozens rescued alive. Fire, police, and city laborers labored amid cries of relatives as officials warned more victims could be found.
At two this morning a mob of about 600 mounted citizens freed prisoners, captured Sheriff Til ley, the jailer, and a deputy, then dragged Sank Majors from jail and hanged him from the new bridge after hearing his confession. Majors had new trial granted to avoid technical reversal of death penalty.
Roswell man Kingston files a $15,000 claim against the government for a house destroyed by Union soldiers during the Civil War. He says the building was disorderly and a night watchman was killed in 1863, with the soldier’s death ruled accidental. The claim was disclosed through Denver newspapers after he consulted attorneys in Denver.
The meeting to discuss steps toward peace is fully arranged with organizers, dates, and participant groups set. Delegates from multiple nations will convene to map postwar cooperation and security measures.

Deeds recorded Monday show transfers in Lake Arthur Townsite with prices ranging from 80 to 2900 dollars. Transactions include Lake Arthur Townsite Company to John F Walcott for six lots in block 36, and to D L Lang for three lots in block 72, plus a single lot transfer to John R Hodges. Wm E Wiseley and wife sell the east 14 feet of lot 61 and west 86 feet of lot 62 in Bell Plain addition to Roswell to Bryan B Barton and wife, who then sell the same property to W O McCullum.
C H Edwards began moving the New York Store from opposite the courthouse to the former J J Gus location. Stock will be enlarged and showcased better in the new quarters. The shop will be bright and attractive. Mr and Mrs Burrus Brassfield arrived from Hickman Ky for an extended visit with Mr Brassfields uncle W C Burrus, and may locate here, joined by Mrs L G Clark who will also settle here.
Mrs. J. W. Amis, long in charge of the Park Hotel, has now assumed management of the dining room. The Park will serve first class meals at all times and will make Sunday dinners a specialty.
Electric Light Company is wiring the Military Institute as the line reaches the campus. Bernard Gunsul completes wiring the main structures and the project is advancing rapidly.
Rev B C Meeker arrived from Hagerman for a brief visit. W S Davisson and E J Mell from Hagerman joined today. Wimberly Hagerman editor was in the city on business. G W Newberry and Stewart Atchison left for Butler Mo after days of prospecting. Hon C L Ballard departed for Las Vegas to attend Territorial Cattle Sanitary Board meeting.
Ralph W Breckenridge of Omaha heads the American Bar Association committee on Insurance Laws which has completed a report for the Naragansett Pier convention. Recommendations call for federal supervision of insurance companies, repeal of valued policy laws, a uniform fire policy term, repeal of retaliatory laws, stricter state incorporation laws, and barring mail use by entities ignoring federal rules. President Roosevelt supports federal supervision.
City Marshal J. J. Rascoe lists subscribers for the old settlers picnic meat fund. Donations include one beef from several residents, one goat, one sheep, two muttons, one pig from Albert Lea, plus about 70 dollars in cash. Names of cash subscribers will be provided when the list is complete.
A marriage license was issued for H. H. Irby, 24, of Dayton, and Leola Mary Click, 16, of Artesia, with reports noting two sisters aged sixteen and fifteen also wed in the same ceremony.
The Regents of the New Mexico Military Institute invite sealed proposals for the furnishing and delivery of commissary supplies meat and drug for the 1905 06 session. Proposals due 6 00 p m Saturday August 12 1905 at the Institute office. Blank proposal forms available from the Superintendent Jas W Willson.
Cal Miller left Sunday morning to locate his thirteen year old son Seaborn Miller who ran away after being induced by a timp this past Saturday.
Wool prices in St. Louis steady across territories with western mediums quoted 28 to 30, fine to medium 23 to 24, fine 16 to 18. Market notes indicate stable tone for the day with bids aligning to fiber quality and regional supply.
Mrs W Stockard and Mrs M D Auld departed Sunday for Denver and will visit Portland and California points of interest. The trip is planned for about a month to six weeks or until they tire of sightseeing.
Mrs Frank Joyce arrived from Carlsbad yesterday and departed this morning for Kansas City for a visit. She was accompanied by her young son John R Joyce Jr.
A. J. Nisbet otf and Clarence Allery returned this morning from a business trip down the Valley. The notice advertises a fine family horse in Roswell, a well broken three year old filly, and a good saddle horse for sale.
The record corrects a yesterday item stating three advertising cars were sent from Roswell in one year. The proper figure is one car for three years. Also running classified notices for rent and sale: a large clean housekeeping room at 110 Richardson Ave by Ida M. Clapp, and a residence for sale at the corner of Main and 13th St by A. J. Nisbet.
Mr and Mrs Charles D Keyes depart for Las Vegas this morning then launch an extended tour through the North East. They will visit Colorado points of interest Montreal Canada and their old Massachusetts home before returning to Roswell next winter.
Tom White departed this morning for Kenna to supervise a roundup as preparation for shipping a herd to Texas. The action signals upcoming livestock movement to Texas markets.
Cy Leland has accepted his new position at Payton Drug Co after starting work yesterday.
Mrs. E. P. Cooley left with her daughter for Elida for a two day visit with friends. W. D. Mahoney and J. H. Kingston arrived from Artesia for business. Mrs. J. R. Campbell returned to Canyon City Texas after a two week stay. Ph. K E Geraldi of Albuquerque and Dave Suppnstein of Denver arrived by car on business.
Harry T. Patterson is at the Hondo reservoir for a few days’ stay and will likely return tomorrow after several days here.
E. W. Mitchell came back yesterday after a week at the Hondo reservoir for a brief stay. C. H. MacLenathan of Carlsbad arrived yesterday on a business trip. Miss Williebell Bevers returned this morning from Hagerman with friends. W. D. Mahoney departed this morning for Chicago.
