Roswell residents of Mexican heritage gear up for Independence Day on September 16 as federal citizens of New Orleans are instructed to cover expenses.
New Orleans Aug 7 1905 federal control to coordinate yellow fever eradication with Marine Hospital surgeons backed by police power. Campaign costs estimated at 180000 to 240000 for the fever months with cleanup of the city under way and eight hundred workers deployed. Archbishop Chapelle's condition improving as messages of sympathy arrive. Secretary Shaw travels to Roanoke then to address bread shortage and Republican convention.
Aug. 7 St Paul There was little change in the telegraphers strike situation today Northern Pacific and Great Northern claim the strike is broken while strikers insist the blockade remains complete and that perish able freight is moved only in small quantities Nearby residents Mrs G L Lawrence and daughter New York visited then returned to Carlsbad for the summer Mr and Mrs John B Kipling left for Portland for a pleasure trip lasting about a month Also Wm McIntosh who sought hogs left for Elmdale Kansas He may return in the fall Mrs W T Johnston and Miss Adelia S Morgan left for Denver Colorado Springs and other Colorado points for a month or two of leisure
A buggy overturned after horses frightened near South Spring. The driver, Mr Forsyth, was pinned in the top of the overturned rig and saved when the vehicle was righted. The second overturn freed the horses which then ran away without further damage.
Reports from Cleveland and Portland describe wrecks and injuries after trains struck streetcars and rowboats. Victims include a 70-year-old man in Harlem, a hospitalized man with severe injuries, and several fatalities among Mexican passengers. Elks lodge events in Roswell and Pecos Valley booming with new residents are noted.
A conference planned to open in Portsmouth was delayed today, with officials awaiting new start time. Organizers and attendees prepared for a postponed session, while venue staff adjusted schedules and security.
Great disappointment in Portsmouth over the 48 hour postponement of the arrival of the Russian and Japanese peace envoys. The gala reception was put off while state troops were recalled for deployment, as Gov. McLane confirmed the delay and the program remained unchanged.

Mr and Mrs R P Bean came home Saturday from a journey to Portland San Francisco and other points They enjoyed a pleasant excursion and a profitable visit at the great Portland fair Albert Hanny and L K McGaffey left Sunday for Portland They will meet in Albuquerque with Fred Miller who will accompany them to Los Angeles Mrs Z I Williams left Sunday for San Angelo Texas after a month long visit with her son J B Williams She was accompanied here and home again by another son Dan Williams
Dan Park who has been in the area with his jewelry partner Harry Morrison left Sunday morning for Denver. He plans to return for another visit in the fall.
W. S. Shelton arrived Saturday night from Jennings Louisiana to evaluate the water supply of Portales wells as a potential site for a pumping plant. He will remain in Roswell for two or three days.
L. G. Stone, after months in the White mountains, left Roswell this morning for Chicago. He came to survey the country for potential investment and finds the outlook favorable. In Roswell he stayed with his uncles, the Walker Brothers.
A. R. Forsyth of Main Street was injured in a runaway while driving to his farm near South Springs Saturday afternoon. He is resting easily and doctors say the case is not dangerous despite the harrowing incident, described as the most severe in months.
Pastor Dr C E Lukens spoke at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday night with stereopticon images of his trip to Yellowstone Park and the Northwest. The planned courthouse yard lecture was moved indoors due to threatening weather and the church was well filled.
Hagerman Messenger reports Rev. S. R. Twitty, the Roswell M E church South pastor, preached at Hagerman Methodist Church on Tuesday. He used Hebrews 12 1 2 3 as text, delivered a forceful discourse with apt illustrations. Listeners hope he returns soon.

H C Maxwell a piano tuner and furniture dealer from Granite Oklahoma is in Portales to view the field and then came to Roswell aiming to locate at least a temporary residence. He travels to inspect opportunities and visit friends during his city visit.
A mass meeting at U F M Hall in Roswell drew a packed crowd as Mexicans planned committees for the September 16 celebration of Mexican Independence. Prof. J B Blea spoke at length, with Refugio Hernandez singing the national hymn. New officers were elected: Blea director, Francisco Santana assistant regent, Emiliano Sandoval second assistant regt, Francisco Hernandez president, Cosme Sedillo vice president, Marcos Sanches second vice president, Romualdo Contreras secretary, Agustin Paredes assistant secretary, Jose Maria second assistant secretary.

Arrangements are nearly complete for the Ancient Order of Hibernians to purchase South Dakota land valued at 300000 to 500000 dollars to support worthy poor of the order who wish to farm. Clergy leaders from Aberdeen and Madison promote the plan with railroads offering free transport. The first settlers are expected to arrive from the East this fall. Conductor Frank McDaniel departed Sunday for Cedar Rapids to reach Galva Illinois to join his wife before returning to Roswell after urged visits.
Local US Weather Bureau report from Roswell New Mexico on August 7 notes a max temperature of 92, a min of 63 and a mean of 78 with a trace of precipitation and light northwesterly wind. The outlook calls for partly cloudy skies tonight and Tuesday with local thunder showers and warmer conditions.
