Mussolini's Son Dies in Plane Crash Near Pisa

Captain Bruno Mussolini, 23, eldest son of Benito Mussolini, died in the crash of an experimental plane he was testing near Pisa. He had served in three wars and was described as living dangerously and a representative of fascist youth. He was married in 1938 and left one child. his death leaves Premier Mussolini with four children.

Billion dollar tax boost eyed to offset defense costs

Senator Connally D Texas urged Senate finance members to add about one billion dollars in extra taxes to the House approved 2.206 billion bill to cover rising defense costs. He noted defense expenses have grown since a prior proposal aimed to raise 3.5 billion. A proposal to lower exemptions for married and single filers was discussed as a possible revenue source.

Roswell Fugitive Captured After Escape

Silvestre Saavedra a 19 year old Roswell fugitive held at the state prison farm Los Lunas was captured in Hermosa Beach California. He said officers that he was picked up four times for questioning after escaping on May 10 and released each time.

Hagerman Mansion Sold To Aston Family In Roswell

J. J. Hagerman Mansion known as South Spring Manor has been purchased by Bert and Mrs. Aston of Poswell from Cornell University. The 1901 built residence on a 200 acre tract near the old farm will be remodeled before occupancy. The Hagerman family played a key role in Pecos Valley development and irrigation.

Roswell Dentist Dr Eiffert Called to Army Duty

Roswell dentist and 1st lieutenant Cecil M Eiffert was called for active duty today in the army. He will leave August 21st for Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio Texas. His wife and two small sons will remain in Roswell for the present. He is a former president of the Roswell Kiwanis Club and last year served as lieutenant governor of the Southwest District of Kiwanis International.

Senate Agrees To Keep Men in Army 18 Month More

Washington August 7 Senate vote extends Army service for selectees guardsmen reserves and enlisted men by 18 months beyond current terms after defeating a one year limit attempt. An amendment by Senator Thomas Utah sets maximum liability at 2 1/2 years replacing the prior 1 year standard. Enlistees for three years could serve 4 1/2 years. The roll call ended 44 to 0.

Secretary of Navy Rejects Draft Plan

The Secretary of the Navy rejected a plan to draft men for Navy duty. It states enlistment supply will meet demand as the Navy has relied on volunteers and should continue to do so. The force offers sea life, training in crafts and trades, and paths to rapid promotion and good civilian jobs after service.

The Chaves County Game Protective Association aims to enroll 300 members as it launches an intensive membership drive through August's annual meeting. B. B. Russian troops battled a two headed push toward Leningrad with Nazi columns advancing from the south along Lake Peipus and German Finnish forces attacking from the north on the Karelia Isthmus within 75 miles of the city.
