In 1968 the six story U.S. Embassy withstood a Viet Cong assault, five Americans died defending it. Today without guards chaotic crowds swept through the abandoned complex taking belongings including a shredder and payroll records. The bronze memorial plaque was torn from the lobby.
Roswell Board heard that elementary students meet national standards on the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills while middle school results fall behind. Asst. Supt. David Lee cited teacher philosophy shifts and fewer remedial programs as factors in the decline, with middle school students proving less than national norms but still capable of meeting their abilities.
The Roswell Daily Record announces a 52 image photo series titled The Instant it Happened covering Civil War to moon landing. Roswell schools show eighth graders surpass state averages while seventh graders drop. tests reflect national norms and local economic and demographic factors.
Saigon unconditionally surrenders and Viet Cong troops occupy the capital. Crowds cheer as North Vietnamese forces enter, with reports of gunfire and celebrations. Diplomatic evacuations and the end of U.S. presence accompany the historic change. The PRG declares Saigon renamed Ho Chi Minh City and a curfew is issued.
President Ford names Lt Gen Louis H Wilson Jr a Medal of Honor recipient to be commandant of the Marine Corps and to hold four star general rank. The nomination follows his WWII heroism and long service record.
Adm. Noel Gaylor says two U.S. Navy jets attacked an antiaircraft position near Saigon marking the apparent last U.S. shots in the Vietnam War. He guided the final helicopter evacuation of 6,500 people and praised Ambassador Graham Martin for insisting on total evacuation.
New Mexico Court of Appeals reversed a district court ruling and sent the multimillion dollar suit against Morton International Nor Am Agricultural back to trial. The First National Bank in Albuquerque, guardian for four Huckleby children, seeks 7.5 million in damages from Golden West Seed Co. and the firms over mercury Panogen-15 poison in grain fed to hogs in 1969 Alamogordo.
