Runnels Loses AFL-CIO Endorsement in NM Race

New Mexico Rep. Harold Runnels says he regrets losing AFL-CIO support after COPE delegates voted not to endorse in the Second District race. The labor group previously backed Runnels and endorsed Sen. Joseph Montoya while Runnels defends his voting record on deficit, food stamps, price controls, regulation, and energy policies.

Senate panel delays, to let full Senate decide on budget figure

The Senate intelligence committee voted 6-5 to let the full Senate decide whether to release the overall U.S. intelligence budget. CIA Director George Bush urged secrecy, testifying before a closed session after the committee previously favored disclosure. Colby had denied a $750 million common figure.

City mystery Food stamp files vanish

Special Investigator Russell D. Barrett says 27 food stamp fraud cases from Chaves County were sent to District Attorney J. Lee Cathey, who he claims has not filed most. Cathey disputes the claim, saying investigations are evaluated and forwarded to an assistant for filing, while Barrett reports grand jury tensions and past prosecutions.

Bicentennial Band and Chorus Thrill Roswell Audience

The 65 member band and 24 member chorus of the U S Armed Forces Bicentennial ensemble performed at Pearson Auditorium New Mexico Military Institute for a capacity crowd and three standing ovations. The program included Praise Overture La Fiesta Mexicana and Stars and Stripes Forever with an encore and renewed cheers for the performers.
