Calvin Finley nine, son of Mr and Mrs J W Finley, died at St Marys hospital from a skull fracture after falling beneath the rear wheel of a CCC camp truck on the main highway about a mile east of the Pecos River bridge. Driver Sherman Mitchell said the front spring broke and he swerved to catch the boy. A coroner’s inquest was planned. Talmage Mortuary to handle arrangements.
Albuquerque April 24 AP Loans closed by the Federal Home Owners Loan Corporation in New Mexico topped 2 million dollars with 901 loans totaling 2 012 748 94. The state office and eight branches conducted the program across New Mexico. Last week 64 loans totaling 130 000 set a state record. A national home modernization bill in Congress prompts preparations for possible administration of the program and enforcement if passed, aiding property owners in financing home improvements.
In Santa Fe on April 24 AP reports House Bill 49 passed 26 to 16, adding a gross income tax of one half of one percent on utilities, funds to State Corporation Commission with excess to schools. Senate moves to kill franchise tax bill as debates over HB49 and HB50 continue with readings in English and Spanish.
Rep J W Taylor told the House that revenue from prior legislation was overstated. He cited the chain store tax producing 40000 of an estimated 140000 and the occupation tax yielding 134000 versus expectations. He opposed SB37 substitute as not financially worthwhile.
Across the country strife grows in autos, railroads, and coal as workers demand higher pay and union recognition. In Cleveland 6000 sympathizers clash with police at Fisher Body plant while 8000 workers at other plants walk out seeking union status. Toledo, St Louis, and Sheboygan see protests, arrests, and tear gas as employers resist. Roosevelt proposes a permanent labor court as talks continue on wage disputes and coal mine returns for 21000 Alabama miners.
Washington report notes President Roosevelt appeal aids House Judiciary Committee as Sumners pushes six administration bills to tighten federal gangster control. Senate advances with eight of about thirty anti racketeering bills already passed to extend federal jurisdiction over interstate crime.
A preliminary list of silver holders was submitted by the Treasury to the Senate. Edwin A. Halsey received it for the Senate, then sent it to Senator Robinson, with Vice President Garner left to consider formal presentation. The list contains 406 or 450 pages of typed names addresses and amounts.

Other committees discuss bank deposit guarantees stock market control unemployment insurance and anti crime measures.
Funeral services for Thomas Peter Talle 50 president of the State Cattle Sanitary Board who died of a rare blood disease at Raton Sunday were held here this afternoon in the Johnson Memorial Chapel with burial at Masonic Cemetery. The Rev A P Gaines Methodist minister officiated active pallbearers included Edward M Keenan Levinus De Smet Springer Arthurs Johnson Raton Walter Naylor Albuquerque L i Ilfeld and H H Drake Las Vegas.
Balboa Panama Canal Zone April 24 AP The big parade of Uncle Sam s fighting fleet through the canal neared completion after 111 warships began transit at 5 11 a m yesterday. The crossing was not finished in 24 hours but should end before nightfall as all commercial traffic remained halted and about 30 vessels waited to pass.
Santa Fe April 24 AP Governing officials discuss a possible special session after current one to address a new tax question under the 20 mile levy limit. Lawmakers note a call issue, debate repeals, and referenda questions on chain store taxes and highway debentures.
Boston and Chicago games were affected by rain with early scoreless innings. Detroit and Washington battled as Welch and Ferrell and Stewart and Berg worked through the delay. New York routed Philadelphia behind strong batting while Cleveland and St Louis finished with no runs.

An armed man in a gray suit entered the Aztec Fuel Company in Albuquerque and forced owner G. A. Taylor to surrender about $100 and checks from the safe. He also compelled Taylor and janitor Manuel Garcia to lie on the floor before fleeing in a car as police pursued highways for the suspect.
In Galveston on April 24 the spot cotton market remained steady with middling at 11.40 and sales totaling 778 bales. The tone notes a 25 point decrease from prior levels as the market absorbed demand and price shifts.
Fifty two small Silver Spruce trees were set on the courthouse lawn under a county contract. E A Grice transported the trees from near Marcia New Mexico about twenty miles up the Penasco river from Mayhill. John Tweedy, chairman, indicated more trees may be ordered. Grice notes he has brought 400 trees to Roswell this year.
Three robbers attempt a bank heist in Round Lake Illinois, fail after a quick gunfight. Banker E C Weber shoots back through bullet proof glass as vigilantes converge. A bystander named William Luebe clubs a wounded bandit with a garden rake. fugitives flee toward a lumber yard. The Dillinger gang is not involved.
In Santa Fe on April 24 AP reports the House approved measures adding legalized lotteries by theatres to gambling and easy divorce bills with a 31 to 11 vote as part of a lengthy night session. The Las Vegas Asylum clerical error fix failed 22 to 22 after a chair's ruling. Rep. Nancy Lane was elected Speaker for the day, first woman in that role. HB28 bonds for state institutions passed 32 to 14, described by speakers as dangerous. Votes swung enough to force a second roll call. The substitute liquor bill covering HB4 HB17 HB31 HB48 HB52 was set as first order of business.
The Roswell National Guard unit Battery A 158th Field Artillery undergoes a day of annual inspection by 1st Lieutenant Frank J. Thompson and Staff Sergeant John F. McBride. Records and equipment were checked this afternoon, personnel at 7:30 p.m. The inspectors, detailed by the Eighth Corps Area, previously visited Clovis to inspect the Machine Gun Troop 11th Cavalry and will proceed to Carlsbad and return to Roswell by Friday.
Funeral services for Mrs. James Tulk McClure were conducted at The Schuler's Funeral Home this morning. The body was sent to Carlsbad for burial after additional rites. Sisters Mrs. W. E. Morris of Phoenix and Mrs. Hellman Queen of El Paso attended, with Miss Ethel Middleton accompanying her mother.
