Fuel tax increase set by Carter energy plan

President Carter’s energy package reportedly includes a standby gasoline tax hike tied to conservation goals. Solar energy not cheaper than natural gas for New Mexico homes

An engineering technician with the Transportable Solar Laboratory in Roswell says current gas prices make solar heating economically unfeasible in New Mexico, though sun powered water heaters can compete with electric ones. Supreme Court rules spanking in public schools not a violation

The Supreme Court, by a 5-4 vote, held that corporal punishment in public schools does not violate the Eighth Amendment. Fire sweeps Galveston hotel. 10 to 12 dead, 28 missing

An early morning blaze destroyed the Central Hotel in downtown Galveston. Police fear 10 to 12 lives were lost and 28 people unaccounted for as 14 hospitalized including several in critical condition. Firefighters battled the flames from 1:57 a.m. and brought the fire under control before dawn, with the front wall the only remaining feature.
