President Carter plans to outline a comprehensive energy policy in a televised address to Congress. He argues an energy crisis exists and stresses sacrifice and higher prices to curb consumption amid doubts about a looming shortage.
A letter signed by Asst. Dist. Atty Jay F. Rosenthal Roswell Police Chief L M Hall and Sheriff Leroy Carpenter announces a county wide effort to prosecute minors drinking and adults who supply alcohol. The plan targets bar owners package stores and financiers with strict penalties and possible liquor license suspensions.
Roswell leaders unveil a city wide program to curb alcohol related crime in Chaves County. Police Chief Hall and Deputy Carpenter say officers will intensify patrols and target known violators while business owners face stricter liquor license scrutiny to deter illegal activity.
Bruce Mixer of Honeywell, engineering technician, adjusts the solar laboratory control panel now on public display in the Broadmoor Shopping Center parking lot. The unit heats or cools via external solar collector plates and aims to supply about 24 percent of U S energy by 2020. The laboratory will stay in Roswell through May.
New Mexico Military Institute reports 37 women applied for admission to the Corps of Cadets for fall 1977. About 25 will be accepted, with half from New Mexico and priority to residents. Ten spaces may open in ROTC summer camp for women, and 11 double rooms prepared for women in Thomas Hall.
Two Roswell residents, Mrs. Steve M. Burstaller and Mrs. Paul Kelly Jr., received the 1977 outstanding trustee award at a joint Texas New Mexico library conference in El Paso. They were cited for leading Roswell’s 1976 library bond campaign that funded a new library after prior failures.
