Nazi planes dropped uncounted tons of explosives and fire bombs on London for eight hours. Morgues overflowed and hospitals filled as widespread destruction mounted. Among the dead were Lord Stamp and his wife. rescue crews and firemen suffered casualties amid the citywide devastation.
Safety Sally will appear today in Roswell as wooden schoolgirl figures to warn drivers at intersections. Charles Lawey Jr of the 20 30 Club says multiple Sallas stand at schools to urge careful driving. The signs are part of the local club safety program.
Santa Fe New Mexico April 17 Governor Miles signed a bill abolishing the state merit system saying veto would have left no funds to run it. He noted he asked lawmakers to restore the department budget but funds were not provided and operation could not continue. Records and forms will be kept intact.

South of Mt Olympus German units engage the British expeditionary force as Italian columns advance toward Kotor and Dubrovnik to link with another Italian motorized thrust.
In New Orleans on April 17 a Catholic educator warned that government taxation and control of private education is imminent. Rev. S. K. Wilson of Loyola University Chicago condemned the National Education Association and many teachers colleges for pushing toward state control, predicting universal taxation of non-tax supported schools and government oversight of private education, with upheaval to come before and after military demobilization.
In Santa Fe New Mexico on April 17 the first split session's expected cost appears lower than the prior 60 day session. Expenditures reported total 53,956.92 dollars versus 55,514.02 in the 14th legislature. Most bills have been accounted for and a final itemized statement will be issued soon.

Cause of the fire is unknown.

Al Smith outdueled Thornton Lee to lift the Cleveland Indians to a 2-0 shutout of the Chicago White Sox. Smith drove in a run and held Chicago to six hits as Cleveland won the series two games to one. Other games listed include Philadelphia beating New York and Washington at Boston postponed.

Secretary Morgenthau announced a bipartisan agreement to seek 3.5 billion dollars in new taxes for the coming year. He said President Roosevelt approves and will address the public soon. Rates cover cotton at 1.38 cents per pound wheat 10 cents per bushel corn 5 cents per bushel rice 20 cents per hundredweight flue cured tobacco 0.6 cents per pound fire cured tobacco 0.2 cents per pound cigar filler and binder 0.7 cents per pound.
No injuries were reported after a collision this afternoon between cars driven by Joe B Danforth and Robert Clifton Carlton at Washington and Hendricks. Only bent fenders were noted as damage.
Santa Fe April 17. The state health department weekly bulletin shows pneumonia cases increased to 34 this past week and influenza at 3, up from 14 pneumonia cases and no influenza the prior week.

German air power pounded London in an eight hour raid with over 400 Nazi planes dropping more than 100000 bombs. German sources called it the biggest air raid in history as city remained engulfed in smoke and flames. Officials said the strike was a reprisal for Allied bombing of Berlin on April 9.

Harold Peed of Roswell, former Roswell high basketball star, has enlisted for three years in the army air corps and will report at Long Beach California May 15 for a month’s basic training. He will then go to Pensacola Florida for 6 or 8 months training and finish work for a degree from New Mexico State College at Las Cruces before leaving for the coast.
