Persistence and consistency beat backyard weeds
A reader from the East Mountains asks about two volunteer plants. Purple mustard is Chorispora tenella, an annual weed in the Brassicaceae that can reseed each year. The white-flowered plant is likely hoary cress Lepidium draba, a aggressive perennial weed with underground rhizomes. Effective control requires persistent removal or use of systemic herbicide to reduce the seed bank and prevent regrowth.
