Holtec moves forward with nuclear waste site in New Mexico
Holtec International submits a letter of intent to the U S Nuclear Regulatory Commission seeking a site specific license for an 85 billion Consolidated Interim Storage Facility for spent nuclear fuel in western Lea County New Mexico ELEA Hobbs Mayor Sam Cobb says the letter marks formal progress in a multi year effort The plan includes a 40 year initial licensing for long term storage at the HI STORE CIS facility to be built and operated by Holtec at ELEA land at least 35 miles from any populated area The agreement involves ELEA four southeastern New Mexico governments and local counties and cities with approvals by Hobbs Carlsbad Eddy County and Lea County officials and legislation signaling support
