Santa Fe reports the 30 day extension for filing income tax returns approved by the Fox Commission. Returns may now be filed by May 15 due to law confusion and outreach limits. A separate item notes discussions on a state liquor dispensary and related revenue plans facing legislative debate and graft concerns.
Hot Springs officials say six men and three women were rounded up during a raid on a suspected Clyde Barrow hideout. A basket of about $2 bills totaling three to four thousand dollars was seized. Names include Guy Taylor Jesse Grover Butts Andrew McDaniel Frank Montgomery Bill H Thorne Clifford Kell. The women were identified as wives of Thorne Kell and Taylor. A federal agent assisted and Thorne Kell and Butt faced prior charges in El Paso.
Funeral services for R. C. Worswick are planned for ten o’clock tomorrow at Ballard Chapel with Dr. Austin Crile and Rev. LeRoy Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Oskaloosa Kansas, with Masonic rites at the grave. the body leaves by train tomorrow afternoon.
The thirty six annual commencement at New Mexico Military Institute features eighty three graduates and seventy one pursuing High School certificates. Ceremonies run June 2 to June 5 1934 with polo games band concerts and a graduation parade. Governor Hockenhull will award diplomas and several medals and scholarships will be conferred. Notable speaker Dr Doak S Campbell of George Peabody College will address the class. Degrees go to cadets from Missouri New Mexico Colorado and California.
Santa Fe reports the House passed the feed bill after sharp exchanges over mileage claims by Rep. Marie Cava Waugh of Fort Stanton, with Velarde contesting mileage figures. Senate action touched on Mountain States Telephone valuations, while six bills were introduced and adjournment planned. Speaker Alvan White's health improved after a collapse, and Rainey called for Silver bills unity in Congress amid concerns of a gold bloc and future wheat market probes.
Washington reports that a petition to force House action on the McLeod bill to pay depositors in closed banks met the required 145 signatures when Rep Sirovich of New York signed. A separate move by Rep Dingell Michigan aims to block adjournment until the bill is acted upon, with signers pledged to oppose any adjournment motion. The push awaits banking committee positioning.
In district court Judge James B. McGhee instructed the jury to return a not guilty verdict in the case of Will Murrah charged with driving cattle from their accustomed range. The change of venue from Eddy county brought the case to Chaves county.
Ten percent wage hikes were announced for all Lake Carriers Association boat workers, and Nash Motor’s Kenosha plant workers voted to accept concessions ending a six week strike. Elsewhere unrest rose with violence as Detroit tool and diemakers halted operations across 45 plants and 17 others reached separate deals. Autolite Toledo workers walked out over a five percent raise May 1, while Gloversville glove cutters voted to strike if wages did not rise. Two pickets at Cleveland Worsted Mills were shot, and bricks were thrown at hosiery workers in Indianapolis. Federated Automobile Workers voted to authorize strikes at Louis Chevrolet and Fisher Pody plants as Pontiac locals pressed for higher pay and shorter hours. Buffalo aircraft workers feared Curtiss move to Baltimore as strikes spread.
About 95 students are slated to graduate from Roswell High this year, 14 more than last year when 81 graduates were recorded. The largest class was 105 in 1930. Commencement is set for Sunday evening May 25 at the Junior High Auditorium, with baccalaureate services May 2. The full graduate list includes Charles Anderson, Harwood Brown, Juanita Baldwin, Elmer Beall, Earl Feutler, Dan Carpenter, and many others.
Washington April 13 AP An estimate by Federal Relief Administrator Harry L Hopkins places relief rolls at 4 700 000 families, up from 4 600 000 a year ago and 3 000 000 in October 1933 before Civil Works began. The rise reflects more unemployed being listed, not an employment index.
The ninth annual Girl Scout Conference of the Cactus Region opened at The Womans Club with a play night presided by Mrs. Paul G. Schultz. Alice Girard received her Golden Eaglet pin from Mrs. Grace T. Bear as eight Girl Scouts staged the three act play Found. A Girl Scout directed by Miss Mary Mullis with Ruth Jean Smith and others performing and Genevieve Yoder as stage manager.
Santa Fe April 13 AP The utility tax plan aims to tax utilities on a fair basis to reduce or eliminate a proposed sales tax. Sen Vogel favors rate and tax paying valuations to align with parity against outside values and other factors. Sen Thaxton believes raising valuations could boost revenue and cut or drop the sales tax. Doubt grows that the business tax can pass the Senate.
Santa Fe April 13 AP T J McNeill R Valencia was selected as minority floor leader of the House in a party leadership move McNeill succeeds the prior leader and takes the post amid party dynamics in the capital.
Washington AP reports the Senate approved a publicity amendment 41 to 34 to make all income tax returns open to public examination and inspection. The measure, tied to a revenue bill, requires Treasury rules and presidential approval for implementation with listed supporters including Senator La Follette and certain Democrats.

A man using the alias George Davis, believed to be William Bryant, was arrested in Roswell on a Utah murder charge. He allegedly fought a man in Salt Lake City before the death, was seen in The Line-Up magazine, and is being held for transfer to Clovis after Utah authorities notified Roswell officers.
