Tax evasion charged against Rep Gallagher in Newark indictment

A seven count federal indictment unsealed in Newark charges Rep. Cornelius E. Gallagher of Bayonne New Jersey with evading more than 100000 dollars in income taxes perjury and conspiracy. The case ties to two unindicted coconspirators and former Jersey City officials. Gallagher allegedly understated 1966 and 1967 income and helped others evade taxes. He has served in Congress since 1951 and led Asia subcommittee actions on U.S. aid to West Pakistan and Bangladesh recognition.

Senate weighs diverting war powers bill to study

The Senate considers sending a bill restricting war powers to the Judiciary Committee for constitutional study. Sen. Justices withdraw from NM candidate filing fee hearing

Supreme Court Chief Justice J C Compton and Justice Samuel Z Montoya recused themselves from a hearing on the legality of New Mexico's candidate filing fee. Oral arguments set for 10 a.m. Thursday involve A L Happy Apodaca of Las Cruces and opponents including Secretary of State Betty Fiorina and Attorney General Norvell. The suit contesting a Norvell opinion seeks to certify only those who paid the fee on April 4 for the June 6 primary or, alternatively, allow nonpayers to pay within a court fixed schedule.

Navy hands base to Viets amid Vietnam withdrawals

Saigon AP dispatch says the U S Navy turned over its next to the last base in Vietnam to the South Vietnamese navy as President Nixon pressed withdrawals despite a major enemy offensive. Da Nang remains the final U S base to be handed over in the near future.

Seventh gangland slaying in New York tied to mob unrest

Police found the bullet-punctured body of Richard Grossman 36 in the trunk of an abandoned Brooklyn car, the seventh gangland style killing in two weeks. Roswell RCDC Hires Bryson as Associate Executive

Bob J. Bryson is hired as associate executive for the Roswell Chamber of Development and Commerce. He will lead the reorganized Business Development, Community Improvement and Women's Division and handle membership sales. Bryson, a native of Hobbs and ENMU graduate, previously directed Industrial Relations at the Roswell RETC and worked as a vocational counselor in Hobbs.
