Three foot snow depths forced road crews to halt operations between Border Hill and Picache Hill. Sgt Scroggins reported lines down at Riverside Camp and shutdown of the Roswell highway department office, prompting a move to the Hondo yards for further action.
The War Department said early today that Bataan defenses had been overcome as Japanese forces struck Mindanao and other areas. Secretary Stimson described U S troops as outnumbered and worn by repeated assaults, exhausted, and enveloped after their lines were broken.
Cotton futures ended higher with May through Jan contracts up 25 to 45 cents. Curb market quotes show gains in major equities and industrials while wool futures slipped marginally and bond quotes were mostly unchanged.
The April cattle and hog sale reports show salable hogs 3 000 with prices down 10 to 20 cents, cattle and calves various grades, and sheep at 6 500 salable with demand weak while British and Japanese actions dominate international headlines. Roswell resident George Zink is in serious condition after a sudden cerebral hemorrhage.

James T Hall died at 1 30 a m at the home of his stepson O B Thompson in Roswell where he had lived 11 years. He was born September 30 1868 in Flemingsburg Kentucky and married Mary Thompson in 1907 in Shawnee Oklahoma. Surviving relatives include a sister, four step-sons, a step-daughter and 15 grandchildren. Funeral arrangements expected tomorrow afternoon at Talmage Memorial Chapel.
