Wirt names six ‘satellites’ in alleged plot to overturn order

Dr. William A. Wirt told the House Investigation Committee that he traced a dinner gathering of administration associates and Soviet News Agency rep Lawrence Todd to a supposed plot to overthrow the social order. He cited quotes from Rexford Tugwell and others about plans to nationalize industries and alter statutes, with further summons suggested for Lewis Douglas and W. S. Westervelt.

Rep. Palemon Martinez of Taos denounced an Associated Press dispatch as inaccurate and labeled reporters traitors and a newspaperman a peeping Tom and eavesdropper. He claimed he overheard nothing inside the Democratic caucus and demanded an explanation of how his remarks were obtained.

House Beats Bill Roosevelts Move On Home Loan Bill

Washington April 10 AP The House Democratic majority defeated a Republican push to adopt the Norris amendment barring political appointments from the Home Owners Loan Corporation The vote stood 231 to 115 The House then rejected all Senate amendments to guarantee 2 000 000 000 in home loan bonds and sent the bill to conference The Senate had approved the amendment backed personally by President Roosevelt.

Mrs Knight Found Dead in Roswell Home

Mrs. R. L. Knight, widow, was found shot in the heart area at 12 20 this afternoon in the basement of her residence 200 South Pennsylvania Avenue Roswell. Her children Beva 15 and Ailon 13 discovered the body after returning from school. A .32 caliber pistol lay on the bed near the head, one cartridge fired, and a bruise over her left eye suggested a fall from the bed. Dr W W Phillips estimated death occurred about two hours before discovery. Coron­er’s jury to meet tomorrow morning at 10.

Tax Bills Move In New Mexico Assembly

The New Mexico House opened with seven bills introduced including a tax moratorium, a Century of Progress exhibit, a liquor control law and construction financing for a Supreme Court building. The Senate passed the tax moratorium bill and adjourned to 1 30 pm.

State ranges improved in month March

Las Cruces New Mexico April 10 ranges during March showed improvement, mainly in the southeast where rains came early and late. Soil moisture is deep enough to sustain early grass, while other areas report dry soil and short grass. Range condition on April 1 stood at 80 percent of normal vs 79 percent on March 1.

Great Southwestern Music Festival Planned in Roswell

The first annual Great Southwestern Music Festival will bring high school students from Texas Oklahoma Kansas Colorado Arizona and New Mexico to Roswell for two days of programs with a third day visit to Carlsbad Caverns not included in the program. Joseph E Maddy of Michigan University will conduct the All Southwestern High School Orchestra and band and T P Giddings will conduct the All Southwestern High School Chorus. A committee will send a communique to the National Music Supervisors Conference in Chicago to arrange further plans under the Great Southwestern Music Festival Association.

Van Welch Jr Brings In New Oil Well Near Artesia

The Record reports Van Welch Jr brought in a new oil well 18 miles east of Artesia and 2 miles from the nearest production. Shot yesterday, it is producing about 150 barrels per day. Location is section 22 17 18. Welch previously brought in another well last December yielding 100 barrels daily.
