Governor A W Hockenhull urged lawmakers to set politics aside and pass economy measures or levy new taxes during a special session of the New Mexico legislature in Santa Fe on April 9. The move follows a denial that his acts carried political significance and aims to address fiscal pressures.
Levi A Hughes 76, longtime Santa Fe financier and banker, dies at his home. Services set for Tuesday at the Presbyterian church with burial in Santa Fe. A Republican leader, Hughes chaired the First National Bank of Santa Fe and led the Agricultural Credit Corporation. He helped expose fraud in the Private Court of Land Claims and served on the State Finance Board among other posts.

In Santa Fe April 9 the New Mexico governor urged lawmakers to set politics aside and address three emergencies: school funding, liquor control, and the primary law. He warned against rushing action, noted the session’s low cost, and pledged bipartisan support to solve the crises without closing schools or misusing relief funds.
J A Britton aged 69 was found dead on the steps into his dugout on his homestead about 22 miles east of Roswell. A coroner jury ruled the death accidental from a revolver wound to his leg, with no sign of struggle. Eyewitness Arlie Greenwood reported finding Britton seated upright at 3 pm Sunday. Deputies and officials testified the 44 caliber pistol discharged while Britton held it, the bullet entering the calf and exiting below. The gun was in a box across the room and a bottle of liquor was found in the dugout. Britton’s son-in-law identified the gun. The inquest continued with testimony from Dr. Phillips.
Albuquerque, April 9. Police watch all highways into New Mexico for Clyde Barrow and John Dillinger as reports place them en route southwest. Barrow with Bonnie Parker are said to travel in a stolen 1934 Pontiac. Dillinger in a Ford de Luxe. Vehicles bear licenses from Minnesota Kansas Louisiana Oklahoma and more. Focus on Raton Pass as authorities broadcast descriptions and plates to state officers. A suspected third passenger, Henry Methvin, is also suspected to be with Barrow and Parker.
A Senate bill proposes creating a new U S land district with a Roswell land office, renewing efforts to return the land office to Roswell from Las Cruces. Supporters Cutting and Hatch push for passage, noting increased Roswell land business from potash discoveries. The measure awaits committee action amid uncertain prospects.
Four cadets from the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell qualified as expert riflemen in the junior division of the National Rifle Association. The named cadets C J Ballinger J W Summers D E Cardinal and W E Hall earned medals under Lt D M Ackerman. Only six nationwide achieved distinguished status and fifty four reached expert this year among 5,620 junior shooters.

In Washington on April 9 the Senate Banking Committee approved a Glass amendment by 10 to 0, creating a three member commission appointed by the President to regulate stock exchanges. The move blocks Roosevelt backed plans to vest regulation in the Federal Reserve Board and the Trade Commission, altering the bill’s original scope.
Detroit April 9 AP The Hudson Motor Car Company announced a shutdown at 1 p m due to inability to obtain parts especially from Motor Products Company where a strike is in progress public relations rep J Edward Schipper said the plant will remain shut until a new supply source or the Motor Products strike is settled about 1000 Motor Products workers went on strike last week causing suspensions for about 4600 other Motor Products employees
In Albuquerque on April 9 the University of New Mexico Lobo tennis team beat the New Mexico Miners five matches to one, boosting hopes to defeat the New Mexico Aggies next Saturday. Key results included Wertz and Rackmill edgeing Acken and True, 5-7 6-3 6-4, in the only Miner win, with other finishes McGuinness over Head, 6-3 6-2, and Matthews over Seville, 5-7 6-8 6-3 among the spoils.
