Chaves Solons Sheen Named To Committees

The New Mexico State Senate committee on committees announced interim panel appointments with eight House seats still to fill. Notable listings include Legislative Council members R. C. Morgan and Tibo Chavez, and Education and Judicial committees with several named senators. House Speaker Bruce King plans to finalize House appointments early next week as the Legislative Council meets Thursday.

Roswell Museum Hosts 1500 View Johnson Portrait by Hurd

About 1,500 people attended a Friday night show at the Roswell Museum and Art Center to view Peter Hurd’s controversial portrait of President Lyndon B. Johnson. The exhibit, limited to museum members, featured works by 30 Roswell collectors and boosted museum memberships by about 100. The painting, escorted by a city officer, left Roswell Saturday for Portraits Inc. in New York and is expected to return for another showing in the future.

C of A Okays 164-Room Residence Hall Plans

College of Artesia President Dr Tom Stevens announced final plans for a 328 student residence hall. The two-story building will house 164 rooms with private baths, furnishings, and separate floors for men and women. It includes a hexagonal campus complex with a pool, lounges, laundry, and a 43 078 square foot living area. Four additional academic buildings and a $2 million bond issue are also approved.

Judge Tosses One Charge In Highway Dept Inquiry

Santa Fe District Court Judge Robert Reidy dismissed one count from a Santa Fe County grand jury probe of the State Highway Department. Defense lawyers argued illegality of indictments and statutes of limitations challenged a Dec 20 1962 deed forgery claim. Remaining charges against four men and six others continue. decision on further motions pending.

New Mexico Young Democrats Back Vietnam Policy Nominate Beagles

At Albuquerque, the NM Young Democrats endorsed Vietnam policy and 18-year-old voting, electing Virgil Beagles of Roswell as president. Delegates rejected rival resolutions on bombing North Vietnam and congressional districting while backing civil rights measures and reforms to Selective Service, the Post Office, and public employee unions.

Artesia College Sets Track Mark at Southwestern Relays

In Lafayette Louisiana Artesia College of New Mexico finished last in every event yet drew 7000 fans who cheered each Artesia runner across the line well behind the winner. The crowd reaction became a noted moment of the meet.

NASA Plans Balloon Launches From Walker Base This Year

Lt. Col. John W. Denton announces NASA will again use Walker Air Force Base to launch PEPP balloons in late spring and summer under AFCRL direction. Four balloons will carry instrumented capsules to Martian-like altitudes near 15,000 feet, continuing the program after last August's 130, 000 foot feat with a 26 million cubic foot balloon.

Cloudcroft Youth Wins Trip to LA in NM Science Fair

Tyrone Mitchell of Cloudcroft won a trip to the Future Engineers Show in Los Angeles and a $25 bond in the New Mexico Science Fair. Winners in physical and biological science were Scott Jenkins Valley High School and Glenn Willson Sandia High School Albuquerque. Durward Benham Jr. Lovington received a $500 scholarship from ACF Industries Albuquerque Division.
