Howden acquitted in embezzlement case in Grants

A nine man three woman jury acquitted Dist Atty Frederick B Howden of embezzlement tied to estate money handled for Adan Perea of San Mateo after nearly three hours of deliberation. Howden expressed relief and reiterated no political motives, while disbarment and civil suits related to bank loans also loom.

Council opens bids for Wool Bowl track project

Roswell City Council with 7 1 vote authorized the Wool Bowl track to go out for bids. Two surface options were presented at 93 000 and 235 000 with alternate bids planned. Financing likely through a revenue bond with city funds advanced temporarily.

Filing Day Opens for County and State Candidates

On filing day in Chaves County a crowd gathered at the Clerk's office to file by 9 a.m. The first filer was Paul Kelly Jr. Republican for State House. Local candidates filed in Roswell while multi county contenders went to Santa Fe. Incumbents noted with (1) include John Walker District Judge and J Lee Cathey District Attorney.

Howard Hughes died en route after stroke on Houston flight

Two pilots recall Hughes emaciated and pale as he was loaded onto a Graf Jet air-ambulance from Acapulco to Houston. They believed the passenger was Hughes, who died aboard the Lear jet before reaching Houston. Authorities cite Summa Corp. as his holding group and note his fortune, once near 2 billion, stemmed from Toolco and later aviation and real estate interests.

Bicentennial Band Concert Tickets Quickly Sold Out

The April 25 concert by the U S Armed Forces Bicentennial Band and Chorus is booked full after a coupon offer. The Daily Record sponsored the event and limited tickets by mail to maximize requests. Admission at 3 p.m. in Pearson Auditorium is first come, first served for ticket holders.

Roswell Eyes 1985 Population Near Sixty Thousand

City planner Ken White told the Parks and Recreation Planning Committee that Roswell could reach 61 438 residents by 1985 with a high projection of 69 274 nearby by 1995. He cited post Walker AFB growth, housing, flood relief, and continued development as factors. Public hearings will continue with a Monday meeting to discuss swimming, youth football, bike paths, jogging trials, and a crafts workshop area.
