State to buy right of way for new Highway 285 route
Assurances say plan is being worked out for the state to purchase the right of way for a rerouted Highway 285 south from Roswell. County officials, led by Chairman Harry Puryear, announced at a district courtroom meeting that no decision would be made today, inviting public argument. The route would depart South Main Street toward McGaffey Avenue then southeast, east of St Marys hospital and South Park cemetery, joining the existing highway south of Crossroads. Rep. Daughtry indicated the county could defer action for 15 days as plans to have the state fund the purchase advance.

Magnolia raises about 8.5 cents per barrel on average with ranges from 6 to 11 cents. Shell’s west Texas and New Mexico crude price scales rise to 60 cents for twenty gravity and below, up to 94 cents for 36 gravity and above, retroactive to March 29.

Funeral services for Donald Meredith 14 of 806 North Richardson will be held Friday at 2:00 PM from the Nazarene Church at 8th and Washington. The Rev W B Attebury will officiate with Wal ter Orr assisting. Burial follows at South Park Cemetery under Ballard Funeral Home. Donald died Tuesday night at Shrine Hospital in St Louis where he had been since February 3. He is survived by his parents two brothers R B Meredith Jr of Clovis NM and Doyle Curtis Meredith of Fort Bliss TX and grandmother Mrs W A Lowe of Roswell. The community extends sympathy.

The United States demanded the immediate recall of Admiral Alberto Lais the Italian naval attache in Washington over connections to sabotage of Italian merchant ships.
